Would it be a good idea to just wait till summer?

DS is 2.3 and doesn't quite seem ready yet. He is interested in us going to the toilet and will sometimes tell us he's done a wee or poo but it's a bit hit or miss. He's a fairly predictable after meal poo type of boy and you can see him going quiet and having a wee squeeze.

DC2 is due at the end of April and I start maternity leave at the beginning of April.

We are currently just continuing to talk about it and try and get him ready for the idea of going to the toilet (Have been reading The No-Cry Potty Training soloution for ideas!).

I am just wondering if it might be best to wait till well after new sibling has arrived and things have settled down a bit before trying, even if he does show signs of readiness in the next few months. I've got no idea what I am doing anyway seeing as he's my PFB Grin.

Any input welcome, thanks. :)

You can do a relaxed potty 'practice' where the child sits on the potty after meals or whenever, but wears nappies between. It's just to get them used to it and at some point something has to drop into the pot. If your DS has a regular poo time then might be a good time to suggest he sit on the potty and see what happens. My DS was about the same age as yours when his day nursery started doing this. We went cold turkey with proper pants at 2.6 and because he understood what would happen he got it within 2 days.

I think in your case, with the new baby coming, you could do the potty practice until everything has settled down and go for it then in earnest. DS needs to be able to know he wants the potty before he does anything, and you say at the moment he tells you after he has done something, so he might not be quite ready for the full-on training.

In your situation I would do plenty of potty practice, but wait until July or August to put your child in pants. Potty training is hard work and its likely that your tot will regress when the baby comes.

that's kind of what i was wondering, have heard a lot about regression and expect we'll have less time to help him when new baby is here!

thanks, will maybe try some practice and see how he gets on. :)

I would wait until baby is here, but even then he is still very young and may not be ready at all this year. I'm saying this because my DS has only just been potty trained and he turns 4 next month. They all do it in their own time and won't be rushed. Regarding the summer, for me the whole point is swapping nappies for pants and I know a lot of people allow their DC to run around naked in the summer to prevent excess mess. Personally this is more for the parents convenience rather than good for the child. When I initially tried, it was a hot spring weekend and in the garden all DS wanted to do was run off and not be anywhere near the potty so the task was fruitless. Whereas doing it in the winter, they are more contained, so more focused, and I believe being wet when its cold weather is worse than in the warmth. You may not be thinking along these lines though so apologies if I have gone off tack. Good luck with it all - potty training and new baby!
