Does anyone have any tips for boys poor aim when weeing sitting down?

My DS - 2yo has just decided to start potty training. I can't quite believe it as DD was SO difficult.

Anyway DS prefers sitting on the toilet without a smaller seat (or a potty) so he's very "perched". Needs help to get up there and stay on. Once he's there he needs both hands to hold on. I try and push his willy down but it's not ideal! He soaked his trousers today as he was stopping and starting whilst wobbling around.

So that's it really - any suggestions or should I just accept I'm his 3rd hand for the time being?

My DS has mastered the art of sitting at the very back of the toilet seat with his legs wide apart, which seems to work (he is nearly 3 & quite tall so don't know if this influences effectiveness). Worth a try, though?

I've heard that for getting boys to aim properly from standing you can put a ping pong ball or similar in the loo for them to aim at! It might work from sitting down?

Alternatively if the 'perching' thing is too hard, my 2.4 DS went straight to standing at the toilet on a step. He refused to do sit down wees and wanted to 'stand up like Daddy', which I guess is fair enough! We've taught him to push his bottom forward to aim into the toilet, which seems to work for now.

Good luck!

We had this too. He learnt within a few weeks to hold his own willy down(!) and hold on to the loo seat with just one hand. Until then we did as you described - him holding on, me pointing him in the right direction Grin
Is there anything close by he can hang onto one handed, like a toilet roll holder/edge of the bath, until he improves his balance?

Thanks everyone. As he's so little I think standing is too hard. Both loos at our house don't have anything stable nearby to hold whilst sitting.

I'm going to encourage him to use the potty (it's ergonomically better for positioning anyway), and if he does use the toilet I'll incorporate all ideas here - sit far back - one hand on toilet, one on willy. Wish us luck Grin

think its probably just something you have to go through but it won't last long. in the meantime I reckon its about disaster management, e.g. minimising the cleaning up required. towels down on floor etc. bless!

smackapacca · 08/12/2011 19:59

Yeah it's probably a right of passage, but it's such a disappointment for him though! He does a grand wee with lots of fanfare then gets covered in wee; not every time luckily.... Grin

DS took it upon himself to sit facing the other way on the potty; the rear of it had a much higher section. Now he likes to stand and that is just horrendous!

Ha Ha. We're in rented property with carpets in the bathrooms. Yuk!

ds had to strip from the waist down when he sat down to pee so he could get his legs wide enough to push his willy down while still being balanced

I have a 5yr old DD who often tries to wee standing up like daddy!!! Messy!! Had explain about differences between boys and girls. Annoying but amusing too!!! Good luck with the boys though x Xmas Grin

smackapacca · 11/12/2011 14:04

Oh I remember doing a 'boys wee' when I was little Blush

Seona - that's interesting as DS likes to strip off too. I wondered why, but you're spot on.

He's actually getting the 'hang' of it (literally) now.

You could try him sitting backwards on the seat, or if you're slim and not pregnant, you sit on first and he sits in front of you. Then you can hold him and he has both hands free for willy-aiming!

Definitely get some of those toilet pedestal mats if you have carpet - at least you can wash them then.
