DD has just turned 3 and is still in nappies.

She was happily sitting on the potty and toilet but not weeing or pooing anywhere other than her nappy. She has wee'd in the potty once, last week.

She becomes very distressed when she has an accident, and says that she does not like going for a wee.

She has a large wee 2-3 times in 24 hours, max. GP says keep an eye on it, not concerned yet.

I started to reward her for doing a wee, whether in her nappy or on the floor, wherever- it had really started to work, and this is when she did her first and only wee on the potty; however, this seems to have stopped working and she says she does not want to do a wee.

I was keeping her in knickers but now she has become very anxious, and wants a pull-up on instead.

She is completely dry at night.

Help! I have no idea where to take it from here...

I'd leave it for a couple of months, tbh. If she's only just 3 that's by no means late to potty train. Let her have a pull-up, give her lots of praise if she mentions anything to do with her evacuations, e.g. telling you she needs a poo or a wee, asking to be changed etc, and then come back to it in a while. The only thing that might concern me is the frequency of weeing. What does she drink during the day?

Can you get someone else to do it with her? I only say this because dd (who was a bit younger, so it might not be the same) was Not Having It from me, but when my mum (who is, in fairness, a really experienced nursery nurse) did the whole stream-of-consciousness chat, dd found herself on the toilet and weeing almost without realising it. Could you maybe buy her a new child seat for the toilet itself, and some new books, just for reading to her when she's on the toilet, and also maybe some juice that she likes, so that all the newness might help her get over her nervousness.

I am, obviously, expecting you to reply "I'VE DONE ALL THAT YOU FUCKWIT" - apologies if that's the case!

Hellfire. why did strikethrough not work?

CokeFan · 30/11/2011 15:46

I presume you've already tried reading "potty" books and showing her that you go to the toilet too?

Would she prefer a different potty or to use the toilet like a "big girl"? Is something frightening or worrying her about it? Do you know anyone with a recently potty trained child who could be an example to her?

Thanks for replies...

fluffy- perhaps you're right. I am concerned about the amount she wees, she will not drink much during the day, and I have started buying squash to try and get her to drink more, but she's not that bothered.

Grin habbibu- I have indeed done that; she has a toilet seat and my mum who's a nursery teacher has her for two days a week and has had no success either. Like the special books idea though, she loves books.

CokeFan- yes, have tried potty books but they've all been a bit poo if you'll pardon the pun, and she doesn't want a bar of them. Do you know of any good ones? She is impressed by friends who are toilet trained; She also goes to nursery 3 mornings a week and tells me who uses the toilet. Have tried the 'big girl' thing, she looks at me as if I've gone mental. Definitely something frightening her about going for a wee- hence my reinforcing and rewarding her every time she has one, to try and make it a positive experience IYSWIM?

We had Princess Polly's potty book.

It cheers when you press the button, which my dd seems to like and she likes picking out her favourite potty and pants (the pink ones, usually). She's 3.2 now (trained over the summer but nowhere near being dry at night).

My DD is completely unswayed by peer pressure or being a "big girl" too.

Thanks CokeFan, have ordered the book.

DD has now got a horrific UTI and is screaming in pain when she wees- it's awful. 4 Hours in A&E last night Sad The only upside is that she has wee'd on the potty five times. Mind you, it's been so traumatic, I don't think she'll want to go near the potty ever again...

Anyway, got antibiotics now, so will wait until she is fully better and try again in a couple of months.

Thanks again all Smile
