Successfully potty-trained, now waking EVERY night for a wee

DS2 is 2.6 and has been out of nappies in the daytime for three weeks, and is fine at going to the toilet in the day. He's still in pull-ups at night but these are usually dry in the morning, however for the past few nights he has been waking and demanding to go for a wee at 3am. He's too little to get to the toilet by himself so I've had to go with him and I'm knackered! Any suggestions for dealing with this before it becomes a very wearing habit?

Could he use a potty in his room at night for now so he could do this on his own and hop back into bed or would u rather avoid the potty and stick with the loo?

MegBusset · 01/11/2011 15:08

I'm trying to avoid going back to the potty tbh, plus I'm not sure he can get his PJs and pull-ups up and down by himself without spillage! I suppose if he's waking for wees anyway then I might as well put him in pants at night too, I had no intention of night training him yet though!

Have you tried 'lifting' him when you go to bed. Our dd goes to bed between 7-8pm and between 10-11pm we carefully 'lift' her out of bed and pop her on the loo. She ususlly does a little wee whilst still asleep then we just pop her back in bed. This should cut down waking for a wee or wetting the bed. Worth a try?

MegBusset · 01/11/2011 15:57

Hmm, might try that, although I thought 'lifting' wasn't recommended these days as it teaches them to wee in their sleep?

Our dd will still wake and ask for a wee every now and then.

We had this when dd was first trained. It also coincided with her moving from cot to bed. It gradually calmed down but getting a day/night clock so she knew what time it was stopped it. Basically I think it was an excuse to get out of bed. She is still 'usually' dry as she was then.

Another vote for lifting here. I had similar situation with DS (he trained easily aged just 2 and was immediately dry at night, i.e. pull up nearly always dry in the morning so I stopped bothering with it after a couple of weeks), but once or twice a week he would wake in the night wanting to wee and was not very capable of getting on the potty (which I had left in his room) by himself so would either call for me or wet PJs as he tangled himself up in them next to potty. Like you I had been warned against lifting and hadn't done so (or needed to) with either of my DDs, but it seemed the obvious thing to solve the problem for DS (keeping a nappy on him made no difference as although it meant no wet PJs we'd still be woken up by him calling to be taken to the loo).

For a couple of months I lifted him before I went to bed and that totally stopped any night waking / weeing immediately. It did not teach him to wee in his sleep. He's now 2.6 and I stopped lifting him a while back. He doesn't seem to need to wee in the night any more (but he still has a potty in his room at night just in case although it's pretty much never used - he doesn't need help anymore)
