OK, so we potty trained my DS at 3years in January and he got it in a week. However, I am now going insane- 2 months later, he starting regressing, not a problem, was prepared for that. Have super duper Buzz Lightyear Chart with special rewards, he loves it. However,he just does not care about being wet! He knows when he needs to go as he often goes by himself in the house. He always tells me or goes by himself when he needs poos. But if he is watching tv, or playing with his friends, particularly at soft play etc, he will just wee in his pants, as he does not care! I know this is common, particularly among boys, but seriously, I have tried EVERYTHING. Just now, have been reminding him all morning, if you need to go, we can pause the film, we get to move Buzz along to get a prize, etc etc, no mummy, I don't need. Weed on the sofa. Fabric sofa. Again. Have done firm also, but he just doesn't get it. Do we give a bad consequence if he wets himself? We are now 4 months down the line and it makes me cry daily. If we take him all the time, there are no accidents, but then he is not learning anything. HELP!!!!!!!

At soft play or other engrossing activities, warn DS before you leave the house that he will go to the loo before he starts play, that he will have to try even if he says he doesn't want to go. Make it clear he won't be playing if he doesn't! Also warn that if he wets during soft play he will have to sit out or you will have to go home. Hopefully he will realise that staying dry/going to the loo means he can enjoy himself, whereas wetting through laziness means he has to miss out.

At home, warn that he must change himself and clean up his mess (under your supervision) and also the TV will be switched off, rather than just paused for a loo visit. This becomes boring after a few times, and he should decide it's just quicker and easier to use the loo. However, you could increase the rewards for every time he uses the loo successfully and stays dry. Might it help to have a really special reward to work towards at the end?

You can waterproof your sofa using disposable bed mats under a fleece throw, or a cheap vinyl shower curtain with a throw over the top. You can whip these off after DS bedtime, and replace ready for next day. Fleeces are easy to wash and quick to dry.
