childminder asking for DD to wear pull-ups

DD is 2,5. On Saturday she asked to go on the potty, which she did successfully.
Since then she hasn't been wearing nappies during the day, sometimes she wore knickers, sometimes nothing as it was easier to go straight on the potty.
The only 2 times she had a 'big' accident was when she did a poo, it was in her knickers.
When she needs a wee she says and goes straight away, she sometimes had a few drops in her knickers. All in all she is doing really well, we were lucky we had a long weekend and were able to spend some time with her focusing on it all.

I informed our childminder about it today saying she is doing really well and that we should definitely continue with the potty training.
Childminder replies that she can't risk DD doing a poo in her knickers as it is unhealthy for the other children and she needs to have DD in pull-ups.
I fear putting her in pull-ups is going to stop her from weeing on the potty...

What would you do?

I wouldn't put her in pull-ups. Maybe I am wrong, but I think that childminders are essential in helping with potty training. How long would she planning to leave your dd with a poo in her pants if she had an accident?

Bluetinkerbell · 02/05/2011 19:09

thanks, that's how I feel about it as well.
So an option is to keep her home and do the rest of the potty training myself, so she is potty trained and can go to childminder in knickers.

Your childminder is taking the piss and basically being lazy. Very confusing for your dd to be in and out of pull ups.

TheVisitor · 02/05/2011 19:16

Pullups are just glorified nappies, and your CM needs to do as she's paid to do.

fartingfran · 02/05/2011 19:18

CM is being lazy. Buy cheap undies from Matalan and tell her it's ok to bin them if they get soiled?

thisisyesterday · 02/05/2011 19:31

unhealthy for the other children?? why? does she make them eat it?

tell her no, she is potty trained and she will now be wearing knickers. end of

thisisyesterday · 02/05/2011 19:33

don't keep her home. she IS potty trained. even a completely trained child can have an accident now and then.
the childminder is being utterly unreasoanble

TerrysNo2 · 02/05/2011 20:26

Glad to see other people think this is just an lazy odd request bluetink, nappies are not even that reliable at holding in poo!!

Bluetinkerbell · 02/05/2011 20:54

thanks all! I think we had a bit of a misunderstanding, because childminder wanted DD to tell her that she does a poo. I told her that DD had told us she needed the potty but that we got to it too late. Told her it would be disappointing putting her in nappies/pull-ups after the progress she had made.
Childminder is willing to give it a go without the pull-ups!
So Fx for DD and doing her poos on the potty! I am quite sure she will if we all make an effort of getting her on the potty in time.

Agree with the others-think she is being lazy too, or doesn't want a mess in her house. She should be helping you with the potty training.

nannyl · 03/05/2011 09:53

its shocks me that a CM cant deal with a poo in a pair of pants Shock

when its your job to look after toddlers you have to accept that potty training is part of it Hmm

I had a problem similar to this with DD being potty trained... simply the CM had a different opinion to me on it - she had no intention of training her DD until 2.5 whether ready or not Confused so pretty much refused to go along with what I was doing... it made potty training very difficult and in the end I pulled her out and rejigged shifts so she didn't need the one day she was going!

Bluetinkerbell · 03/05/2011 17:12

right so today was first day DD went to CM. When I went to pick her up CM said she only had 1 accident, she had weed in the playhouse at the end of the garden. DD didn't tell CM when she needed to go but when she was reminded she went on the potty. When I came home I saw on her reward chart she went 5 times today! Which is really good!
BUT... when I picked her up, I could smell she had done a poo (being pregnant Wink my sense of smell is quite developed) so I checked and yes, she had done a poo in her knickers.
CM asked what I wanted to do... said well get her out of those and put a clean pair on of course. ( didn't say out loud what I was thinking... you honestly don't think I would leave her in that and walk home in the pushchair with her in soiled knickers)
So wiped her clean, took soiled knickers home.
CM said well she's not quite ready yet is she...
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah SHE IS!!!!

She said what if that happens when she is playing somewhere and I don't notice...
I didn't reply to that, think if I would have, it would have been nasty...

so tomorrow DD is just gonna go back... in knickers

CM told me in the morning she had a bad experience with a boy who went straight into pants and wasn't ready and pooed everywhere and she was late in picking up other children as she had to shower him and clean up stuff...

fyi - one thing I was told by my CM is that she would just 'put dd in pullups' whether I took them or not if she thought it necessary

thisisyesterday · 03/05/2011 19:40

well i would suggest that if a child can poo without her noticing then she has something very wrong with her sense of smell!!!

littleducks · 03/05/2011 19:44

Send her in cloth pull ups the day she goes to CM, they do 'hold' more than pants so could help if she was out somewhere inconvenient but still feel like pants

And you are complying with CMs request which should cheer her up

You probably only need 1 or 2, they sell them in boots or wilkinsons

ziggyf · 12/05/2011 13:49

I second littleducks idea - Bright Bots training pants are knicker-like and fairly cheap but hold poo well.
