Dehydrated, or just super bladder control?

Interested in others' experiences, as I have no basis for comparison. DS1 is 3 and a half, and has been potty trained since he was 3. From the start, I always thought he didn't need the loo that often, but thought he might be holding it in because potty training was stressful. But since the first few weeks he's had no concerns about the loo at all.

He probably only goes to the loo twice or three times during the day. Recently we've given up night nappies because he's always dry in the morning, but it's made me realise just how infrequently he wees. Yesterday he had a wee at about 4.30pm, 'tried' but couldn't do anything at bedtime, and then wasn't desperate to go when he woke up this morning - didn't bother until after breakfast at about 8.30am. Normally he does do a wee just before bedtime, but in that case he might not go again until mid-morning the next day.

It's great that he's dry at night, but I'm worried that he might be dehydrated? He doesn't usually have a drink 'on the go' during the day, but he has them quite often. A cup of water and one of juice with breakfast, a drink of water or water/juice mix at morning snack time, a cup of water with lunch, a water or water/juice with afternoon snack, then water with tea. He doesn't always finish his drinks, but seems to take quite a bit usually - and I always offer more if it's hot.

Just wondered if I'm not giving him enough to drink, or if he's really unusual, or if others have similar experiences?

The way to tell if he isn't drinking enough is the colour of his wee. If it's pale and 'straw coloured' and not strong smelling then he's hydrated. If it's dark and strong smelling, then he needs to have a drink on the go all day.

Both of mine were like this for some time after potty training. I never assumed dehydration I just assumed they had good bladder control convict they. had not got into bad habits of going too often as we can do as adults. Neither went more than 2- 3 times in a day and never through the night. It didn't last though and now they go more frequently yet still not as much as me but me and my inability to pass a toilet is a whole other thread.
like thevisitor said look at the colour that will give you more to go on.

Thanks for the reassurance. His wee is always pretty much invisible, so I guess that means we're ok. And I'm glad it's not just mine with the bladder control (though I hope it lasts forever!).

this has reassured me thanks! My thre and a half year old has been potty trained since Oct with no accidents but recently she won't go to the loo more than once or twice during the day - often by my insistence. Her night nappies are always sopping wet though. Nursery report she does go so maybe I will relax and let her decide at home too (although I really worry when it gets to well past lunch and she hstill hasn't gone!!)
