Do people seriously potty train at 18 months?

DD1 and DS were both about 3 when I potty trained them. It took just a couple of weeks for them to be dry day and night and they rarely had an accidents.

DD2 is 17 months and over the last few days no less than 3 people have asked if I will be potty training in the next few months.

I am Shock I haven't even thought about it yet. Has anyone really ever done it at such a young age??

My mum did all of us as soon as we turned 2
it was the done thing before disposable nappies as all the washing was a pita
she always did it in the summer and let us run round butt nekkid, lol

Hehe, I tried at 18 months as I thought my dd was ready. She was very interested but physically she wasn't able to hold herself or feel the need to go early enough to tell me before she did go. So we waited until she was two and it worked perfect then. Personally I think 3 years is a bit old but its up to the child when they are ready and there's no shame in beginning and then stopping again!

DS2 sort of did it himself at about that age. I'd take off his nappy and he'd be dry, pop him on the potty, he'd do a wee and I'd put the nappy back on. However I got to the stage where when we were home I'd just take off the nappy and leave him to get on with it. He was 23 months though when I was brave enough to put him into pants.

DS1 though was a completely different kettle of fish was only just starting to be dry by 2 1/2.

Horses for courses.

But I'd never ask someone when they were going to start potty training. I hated it and felt it was like Russian Roulette with toddlers!

I understand it more if reusable nappies are being used plus there is a big difference between a 2yo and an 18mo.

Just seems like if you do it too young it will be really stressful and hard work. I might wait until she actually removes her nappy herself and takes herself off to the toilet. Grin

I tried at 18 mo as the nursery were putting pressure on us (which with hindsight is a bit Hmm) and she seemed ready in some ways. She wasn't ready though and started getting really upset about it. I stopped it after a few days when I realised I was going to end up giving her ishoos about potty training.

Tried again at 2.5 and she got it within a matter of days. Not a single accident.

some (a very few) do and most don't. All children and parents are different. it is not a predictor of future intelligence! I would guess that those who say they are trained at 18 months have been doing potty sitting for a lot longer so child is happy and relaxed with it and probably having dry nappies before actually going into pants at that age.

They're all ready in their own time
Dd fully day and night dry well before 2-she was obv ready to potty train cos she asked for clean nappy before doing a wee
Ds1 & 2 were 2.5

Some childen walk at 8 months and other children are over 18 months. Development varies rapidly.

My dd has been using the potty occassionly for quite a while and she is 22 months. She is still in nappies as she is very distractible. She certainly has bowel and bladder control, but there is very little warning.

I'm waiting for the summer before trying pants.

i introduced the potty at around 16 months and some people would count that as 'proper potty training' wheni dont consider it as such...
