Help! DS suddenly afraid of doing poos in toilet.

He has been happily using the toilet for several months now with no problems. But this last week he has refused to use it for poos, although he will wee into it no problem. So every evening around dinner time he will start asking me for a nappy - clearly so he can go off and use it instead. I've been saying no - that nappies are for bedtime but he fills it immediately after it goes on. I'm trying to be reassuring and not making a big deal of it but nothing seems to be changing. Any ideas or suggestions on how to deal with this?

I thought I might have had a reply but this is different to the problem I had. In my ds case it was using the potty instead of the toilet which eventually he stopped having a problem with. Hope someone has an answer of sorts for you.

thanks anyway bnm. Maybe he'll just grow out of it in time.

My ds had a similar problem in that he would wait until his nighttime nappy before he did a poo. I think he went only once in the potty before this all started.

I actually let him do his poos in the nappy and would give him one when he needed to go. I know that some people will say not to do this but I didn't want him to be constipated.
Anyway, I made him do his poos (wearing the nappy) on the toilet and I also changed him in the bathroom as I wanted him to know that poos belonged in the bathroom. Before then he was only doing it standing up.

Once he did that I started cutting holes in the bottom of the nappy so that the poo would actually just fall into the toilet.
Once he realised that wearing the nappy didn't make a difference, he stopped wearing one. I kept waiting for him to grow out of wearing a nappy so started cutting holes in November and by end December he suddenly decided that he didn't need to use a nappy. The bribery of a maxi scooter also persuaded him.

He was 4.5 years at the time and had been potty trained since he was 3.3 years. He also stopped wearing night time nappies during the summer so we were only using nappies for pooing which was frustrating.

I honestly didn't believe that he would ever 'grow out of it' but he has done.
Perhaps cutting holes might help? Just a suggestion.

Will he poo on a potty just to keep him doing it in his nappy? I know some of my friends kids have been startled by the splash back of the toilet and that has put them off. I think they put tissue down first for a while.

Hmm, never thought of the splashback thing. I think something has upset him as he's quite determined not to sit on the toilet. We went straight to toilet without a potty so can't try that but will try the tissue paper. Thanks everyone.
