Hi

So this is my second attempt at training my son (turns 3 in Feb).
He has shown classic signs for a while (hiding to poo, telling me done a wee/poo) but I'm really not sure how to progress things.
He seems fearful of the toilet (standing or sitting) and doesn't seem to get the concept of letting go.
I've tried to sit him on the potty daily with the TV or a book or some other distration but he's not interested in it (even tho it looks like a giant frog !).
He is always talking about 'big boy pants' and knows that nappies are for babies and he needs to be a big boy and do his wees/poos like a big boy.
Not sure where to go next.

Any ideas??

Thanks loads!

Mads

hi, my twins are 3 in january. i started potty training my daughter on her 2nd birthday, left my son though till he was 2 and 3 months. i took the nappy off and said that they were big kids and this kind of stuff. i was putting them on the potty every 20 mins for the first day, i know it's hard work but it pays off. on the the 2nd day every half an hour and was all the time reminding her, third day every hour and on the day 4th she came to me and said she wants wee wee! every time they did in the potty there was a treat waiting, stickers, clapping hands, calling daddy and telling him how big kids they are and if they were really good all day a small toy or sometimes they got small choc.
i didn't put nappies at all, there were accidents as well. they don't just potty train themselves in one day. it really takes time and you need to stick to one thing. don't put nappy on if he's not trained in a week or two. it'll just confuse him.
and sometimes a normal looking potty is better then the fancy ones.
good luck!

I'd take him shopping to choose his Big Boy Pants after Christmas. In the meantime get yourself a copy of this book and this one for him.

Good Luck

I just potty trained my DS at the start of november after a few false starts through the year (he is 3 in march). He was much like your son and a bit fearful/unsure of the potty.

First week i let him run around in just a top so easyer to catch the wee! and when we went out it was a pull up. Second week i just put clothes and underpants on him took him to the potty every 1/2 hr and made sure i his little back pack with 2 spare changes of clothes and an old carrier bag for the wet ones when out and about. He was dry within the week and only has an odd accident (normaly if he falls asleep in the car) now and then.

Good luck.

Thanks for all your replies.
We've had one wee success this morning, so a little improvement but still seems to fear going - if only accidents were the problem! At least he'd understand the concept of releasing!

He's already chosen his big boy pants, which he loves (THomas and Peppa)and wants to wear them around the house (which we are doing with just his top).
Also, the potty was chosen because he's pretty big and needed something big enough for his bottom! The bog standard (pardon the pun) ones aren't big enough for him.
I've also got him a potty book.

Any other tips??!!

None really apart from the obvious. Make a huge fuss when he does it on the toilet or potty and ignore the accidents, otherwise you'll still be struggling this time next year.

I potty trained my ds1 2 weeks after he turned 2.
I was quite lucky that it was summer, and tbh, I did push him a bit with it.
When we were at home, he was naked waist down and I just kept asking him if he needed a wee and would then sit him on potty every 20mins ish.
If I saw him wee on the floor, I'd quickly get the potty and hold it infront of him so he could see the potty collecting the wee and would then make a huge fuss over there being wee in there.
I had a few potties (ds1 prefered the ones that are more like chairs), so whilst we were doing this we also potty trained his favourite teddy.
I'd hold teddy up to my ear and tell ds1 that he'd just told me he needed a wee, so I would sit teddy on the potty, but before doing this, I'd get one of ds1's flannels, soak it in water, and without ds1 seeing the flannel, I'd hold my hand under the teddy and give the flannel a squeeze into the potty when I was putting ted on there.
When teddy came off, there was 'wee' in the potty, so ted got a chocolate button and a sticker for his reward chart.
In total, it took about a week to become fully trained.
I also put 'big boy' pants on under his nappy when we went out so he could feel the wettness better (but I didn't have to wash untold amounts of trousers)
I did the same (training with teddy) when it was time to move ds onto the toilet and again when it was time for ds1 to wee standing up.

Goodluck.

Love the training teddy too and pants under the nappy!!
Gonna give those a go.

DD was a doddle to train by comparison!!!!
