We are on day three. Neither of us having much fun tbh.

We need to go out tomorrow but this involves a bus ride (longish).

I am bricking it.

Have a potette and will put DS in thick trousers, but wtf do I do if he announces that he needs a wee (unlikely) mid-journey, or worse, wets himself on the bus (more likely)? I will also have 4 month old DD with me (probably in a sling) so my movement is fairly un-speedy.

And further to this, what's the ettiquette around cleaning up accidents when out of the house? Do you carry a bottle of cleaning spray and kitchen roll around?

TIA.

run away as quickly as possible

When I was in your position, I just put mine in a cloth pullup and took them to the loo when I could. I waited till they were reliably trained before venturing out with them in pants. Saved a lot of stress for all concerned (particularly me). They didn't mind, and it didn't set them back at all. I just marketed the pullup as 'special going-out pants'.
Not sure what the norm is regarding cleaning up accidents when out, but I'd take a mini bottle of cleaning spray and some kitchen roll/an old towel if I thought there was a chance either of mine would wee themselves on a bus.

Put him in a cloth training pants?

I'm very much of the no going back to pants when potty training but I do think you are putting yourself in a tough position here

How reliable is he atm? I really dont think you can take a child that you think will prob wet themselves on a bus and wait for it to happen (sorry)

If this long journey is unavoidable then I think you need to consider one or more of the following:

put him in cloth training pants or "pull up"

Sit him on a towel or similar.

When entering or leaving the bus do so as quickly as possible. Ime he is fairly unlikely to wee as you are walking along the bus to sit down/get off.

If the journey is in any way unavoidable then put it off until he is a little more used to the training.

Cloth training pants are marvellous things. I used Bright Bots with my DD for similar situations and they at least catch the wee or poo. Your son will still be wet and uncomfortable (good, really, as you want him to notice) but they really do stop anything leaking onto a seat or outer clothing. Then at least you only have to carry changes of pants and put the rest back on rather than the whole lot. If you can't get any before the journey, use pull ups. Not fair to let a child wet a seat that someone else will have to sit on.

Having the same problem, where do I get cloth training pants? We need to ditch the pull ups asap as DS just isn't getting it

KittyFloss · 25/11/2010 20:44

God I remember a little girl on the bus, she was in one of those really flimsy prams. She obviously wet herself and I have never in my life seen such a stream of wee from a small person, it really covered the floor of the bus, poor Mum.

Dd has wet herself on the bus before, luckily we were at the back and made a run for it Blush. If he is going to be in his pram for the journey you could put one of those bed mat things under him. If he is going to be on a seat, it depends how long the journey is. You could put him on the potette just before the journey, that should cover it.

Owlingate · 25/11/2010 20:44

Put the pants on. Put a pull up over the pants . Then he has still wet his pants but the bus isn't wrecked. Or thick jeans (ime best for soaking up wee) and a towel.

I sympathise, I had to take DS2 to docs on emergency on day 2 of potty training DS1. He pooed himself in the doctors thus making us late for appointment and weed on the floor of morrisons which I nipped in to on the way out. This is despite me sitting him on the loo every 5 seconds both in the docs and in morrisons. The ladies in morrisons kindly cleaned the wee up and I tried not to feel bad.

On day 8 of potty training however I took him on a four hour journey using the pull up over pants method - he was fine.

I do sort of have to go (as have to take DD to a hospital appointment).

Ummm.... Perhaps if I make him sit on the buggy, with a towel underneath? What do you think?

I really dread him having an accident when out but training has been horrible so far and I fear that putting him back in a nappy will fuck the whole thing up beyond all redemption.

I got some cloth training pants in Mothercare and in Wilkinsons. will try and link. :)

onepieceoflollipop · 25/11/2010 20:47

you can get white ones and other designs too

Horton · 25/11/2010 20:50

Sit him in the buggy on a towel with a bin bag under the towel. And take spare clothes, towels and bin bags. These things happen.

I got my training pants online. Google Bright Bots, you'll get tons of hits.

Jareth · 25/11/2010 23:09

thanks for the link opol :)

I used to go on the bus all the time and just took a plastic carrier bag and a towel. put down bag with folded towel on top and child sits on that. Luckily never actually had an accident though.....

I had cloth training pants but found them a bit useless. They don't contain a whole wee so if sitting on a bus journey you would still get a leak.
