Peeing standing up

We've just started potty training DS and he's been weeing in the toilet and has pooed in the potty. When should I introduce the idea of peeing standing up? He's seen DH doing it and does have a step, but hasn't seemed to want to do it himself yet. Should I suggest the idea to him or is it best to keep him sitting down until we're accident free.

The other thing I was thinking was that he would probably have to pee sitting down mostly when we're out, as most places won't have a step?

As late as possible, it's a pain when they start peeing standing up, it gets everywhere.
By school age, yes, but not before if you can help it.

hi

have just got DS2 out of nappies about a month ago and he LOVES to pee standing up. And he can do it himself which is great. (we have step in the loo) If we are out and there is nothing to stand on, then I just tell him he needs to sit on the loo- and he is fine with this. Or I hold him up if he wants to do it that way- I think he likes seeing the pee coming out Smile.

Really not a problem at all. We don't use the potty at all now.

I concur with ragged - put it off until at they are able to leave home or clean the loo (walls/floors/doors) themselves!

And whatever you do don't tell ds to shake it at the end to get rid of drips. Boys are always in a rush and the end to them isn't the same as the end to me! Darn you dh and your 'helpful' suggestions!

It depends on the child. (Doesn't everything?)

For Ds1 we did this fairly late on and was no big deal (no more or less mess)

But for ds2 (for some geometrical reason that I don't understand), he makes much less mess standing up and so has done it from pretty much the start of potty training. I also found this less hassle as he was a bit unstready getting on and off the toilet but could pee standing up without any help/supervision.

I am not encouraging that at all. too messy for me. ds is 4 and goes all by himself.

Thanks for the feedback.

I think I'll just continue with him sitting down until he decides otherwise. I would imagine that he'll want to try it himself at some point after seeing DH, so will let him lead the way.
