I have been trying to encourage dd to use the potty. She will sit on it but point blank refuses to do a wee or poo in it.

Instead she wees on the carpet and waits/ asks repeatedly for her nappy to be put back on before she does a poo.

Today, only mins after asking her if she needs to sit on the potty, she ran into her playroom, pulled off her pants and wee'd on the carpet (for the 3rd time in about 30mins). All whilst laughing uncontrollably to herself. This earned her a min in the reflection corner.

I have never used timeout in this way before but I felt she was doing it to be naughty and couldn't really let it pass without some sort of show of disapproval.

I'm not sure how to proceed.
I have told her that if she does a wee in the potty she will get a reward (sticker or treat).
I've taken her nappy off and put her in pants.
Her potty is well within reach.
She knows when she needs to go and will take off her pants when they're wet and often before doing a wee. So she obviously does not like the feeling of wet pants.

Should I just carry on or do I need to change my approach? Any advice will be welcome. She is 27months and we've been advised by the GP to potty train to help with fungal infections she keeps getting from the nappies.

If you hadn't been advised to start potty-training for a specific reason by your GP I would just suggest giving up for a few weeks. To successfully potty-train you need for the child to be willing to co-operate and yours sounds like she isn't.

If you absolutely have to potty train then I'd work more on the rewards, find something she really wants to make her excited about using the potty. You can also encourage her to sit on it for longer by reading to her or putting it in front of the TV. But to be honest it sounds like she's not really ready so it's not going to be easy.

Could you look at the cause of the fungal infections, rather than trying to potty train her when she doesn't quite seem ready??

Thank you both. We had one more accident after I posted this but she did sit on the toilet with her special seat after watching me do a wee.
She still didn't do anything but I do think she was at least thinking about it as she seemed to concentrate for a bit Smile.
I gave her a choc finger as a reward for trying.

The Dr thinks the fungal infection is caused by her disposable nappies. It isn't a rash exactly, just red, sore and sometimes weepy skin. It is always worse when she has been at nursery for the full day as although they change her often they just can't do it as often as I would or let her run about bare bottomed for an hour or so.

Also the nursery have mentioned that she gets scared during nappy changes. They lie her down on a high table which she has never been comfortable with. Not sure why as she's never fallen off and is not afraid of heights unless you lay her down.

I think I really just need to get her potty trained and these issues will hopefully go away. But I accept it isn't going to be easy. As long as I don't make things harder for her in the long run.
