Quick question - poo-witholding toddler - nappies or loo?

sorry for the question, but I wanted some quick answers/advice. DS is 3 and a half. He mastered weeing on the loo earlier in the year, but seemed to be typical in that he would only poo in a nappy, not on the potty or loo. He had been getting a bit constipated/holding it in, so on the pharmacists advice, we started giving him lactulose. Three weeks ago he finally did a poo on the loo. This led to lots of praise, a special toy we had been saving until he did that (yes, we did resort to bribery - the reward chart or chocolate buttons had not worked), and he has done it a couple of times since (still with lots of praise). However, he's still on the lactulose but hasn't pooed now for 6 days. I'm going to try to get a GP appointment for him today, but I wanted advice. If the GP gives him laxatives, would it be a backward step if we put him back in nappies for the duration, or do you think he would be able to cope on the loo?

The doc may prescribe Movicol, it worked brilliantly with my daughter and she used to get so constipated. We're persevering with pants, at the mo she has got into the habit of saving it up for each night in her nappy but its keeping her regular.
