DS has only been potty training since last week. He has got it very quickly although he doesn't like his poos. He goes without us asking him at home.

When we go out, he will not say "I need a wee" etc. We ask him and he says no, then a bit later he will go then tell us. He doesn't particularly like the feeling of wet trousers and doesn't like walking in them but I don't know how to get him to tell me that he needs to go. DH took him to the park this afternoon and asked him if he wanted to go. DS said no then wet himself just after.

Any tips?

i was about to post a similar thing! my ds is not yet 2 1/2 but has been in pants at home for a few months and will go without us asking or reminding him. i haven't been ready to put him in pants when we go out cause he just won't tell me or use the potty/toilet when we're out. i've finally found a small enough potty to take everywhere with us that he's happy to use so am just sticking with the slow approach - asking him every 20mins and taking him every now and then to change him and get him to sit on the potty. i have worried that it's confusing to put him in pants to go out but untill he's showing more signs of being happy to go when we're out i'm keeping him in a nappy for days out.

On arrival somewhere, take him to the loo to have a try, regardless of whether he asks. Don't give the opportunity for him to refuse by just asking him. Just say 'we are going to try doing a wee now" Sometimes they don't like potties and toilets that aren't their own, so you may need to take a potty with you everywhere.

DD3 is at this stage, although I haven't yet tried to venuture out with her. She is 26 months.

She is brilliant at home, goes on her potty then tips it in the toilet - she did her first poo on there at the weekend too.

IIRC with DD's 1&2 - instead of asking them, i just took them every 15 minutes or so and especially after having a drink.

PERSEVERENCE IS KEY

I do have a potette and at our toddler group he was happy to try and sit on the toilet with a toddler seat on it which was the first time he tried it. He did stay there for a little while. Obviously he didn't need to go at that time and went a little while later. I was going to try him sitting on it again just before we left which is what I was getting ready to do when he did have an accident.

I guess trips out are going to take a lot longer at the moment then!!

Thanks for the advice.
