Potty training

crikey is it time to ditch the night nappy already?! help!

my 3.1yo was potty trained last week (took 1 day - I guess it was just the right time for her) and is happily using potty/toilet.

she gets upset at night though as she doesn't want to wear a nappy. she's taken longer to get to sleep as she gets up to use the loo, and when she wakes up her nappy seems quite dry and she has a (massive!) wee in the loo as soon as she wakes up.

does this mean she's ready to go nappyless at night? we're about to change her room round a bit so we would probably wait until she's used to it.

a quick question about pampers pull-ups - the day-time ones, would they be ok at night now that she's not weeing much? we've got some to use up and they'd be easier if she did get up and use the loo.

also what else do I need in the way of spare/waterproof sheets etc?

If she wants to wear pants to bed then let her -- DS1 asked to wear pants at night about three weeks into training (at 3.4) and has only had two accidents in three months.

Boots do cheap mattress protectors, shove one under the sheet and job done.

My DS was dry at night at the same time as during the day. He also decided very quickly that he wanted out of nappies at night, so we ditched them within a couple of weeks. Tesco also do cheap mattress covers. Get 2 or 3 so you can change them quickly at night if needed.

yes, DS is 3y3m only just getting there in the day (as in a month ago he was still in pull ups) and yet has been dry at night for quite a while now so a few days ago I took the plunge! It's been fine. Bought waterproof sheet from argos, wasn't plasticy like I thought, more platicy/papery. no accidents so far. Only have a spare normal sheet (because argos only had one waterproof one ) but my thinking is if he did wet the bed he'd probably only do it once during the night, and I could lie him on a pampers changing mat after that if I needed to.

BUT he has now discovered that needing a wee is a valid excuse for getting up during the night . Of course it is, but he went for a couple of months iirc with dry pull ups in the morning, i refuse to believe that all of a sudden he needs a wee in the middle of the night!

mattress protectors are good but as they are kinda plasticky used to make my son sweat at night so I made the bed with mattress protector, old towel, sheet. This made the bed more breathable IYSWIM. Don't know how effective it is in wee department as he's not wet the bed yet (touch wood)but helped with the sweating and the crinkling noises the mattress protector used to make.

thanks for the replies.

I went out and got a couple of new normal fitted sheets (as she only had 2 before!), a proper fitted mattress protector and a pack of disposable ones.

I have heard that you can do mattress protector then sheet, then the same again for quicker changes at night.

is it better for her to wear knickers at night, or nothing under her PJs? I was firmly brought up to 'air myself out' so to speak

DS has nothing on here

DS1 wears pants (no PJs atm), I don't think it's a life-or-death decision, whatever she's comfiest in! (i can't actually sleep without pants on, must be a security thing!)

thanks. I was planning on leaving it a bit longer but I put her (to her annoyance) in a pull-up last night, and this morning the little outline of the apple was still on it, so I guess that means she didn't wee at all in the night?

I'll put the potty in her room next to the night light and she'll get a star on her chart if she's dry all night (same as in the day)

OK a bit of a disaster here - ds wet the bed last night first tiume hes weed at night in weeks. In itself that isn't a problem of course but he was really upset and distressed - luckily DH was able to change and soothe him while I sorted the bed out. He cried in a way he hasn't done since he was tiny (I thought it was DD at first) and then kept saying "I weed on the bed" in a horrified voice. He then dreamt he did it again a couple of hours later - I raced in and changed him and removed the changing mat I'd put under him before I realised they were dry. I am considering putting the pull ups back on tonight. I don't care if he's dry at night or not at the moment, just dont want him to be upset like that.
Any ideas?

SPB - my DS gets like that if he wets at night (max of about 6 times in the last 2 years). I've never gone back to a nappy at night, as I am convinced that chopping and changing just adds confusion in their minds - sometimes its ok to wee in bed at night, but sometimes its not, if that makes sense?

If he is dry at night usually, and this is the first accident, I would stay as you are.

As a caveat though, I had my DS in cloth nappies, never used pull-ups and he decided to potty train himself at 2.5, and was dry at night at the same time. I don't say this to boast, just to say that he may well be a very different sort of child.

yes thats what im worried about. He needs to be working towards not weeing at night and learning that if he d
oes he makes a puddle, harsh as that sounds And now hes started & was doing so well i dont want to undo it. Obviously if he wets every night i'll rethink.
i think i'll try again tonight, with lots of reassurance before bed. I'll also put a pampers mat under him as i think part of the shock was that the puddle was soooo huge!! Also would make it easier for me to sort out.

mine went dry at night at the same time as during the day. I didn't know any different for my first, so just went cold turkey - he was fine and my second was just like yours, adament that she didn't want to wear a nappy.

I did the same with my 2 younger ones too.

It has definitely worked for me doing it all at the same time. I didn't do night time nappies, but did put a waterproof sheet on. We didn't have any accidents.
