I have a 4.5yo girl who is always sodden at night, 2 dry nights in her lifetime. I know children can take ages to be dry at night (I was 12yo) so am not pressurising her atm. However, she desperately wants to be dry at night so I want to help her.

Has anyone tried an alarm recently? I remember staying awake so mine didn't go off because the noise was so loud and terrifying.

Has anyone had desmopressin under age 7?

How did you successfully train your DCs?

Can anyone help?

No help, except that I know that Christopher Green advocates usage of an alarm when a child is 6+. So maybe - if you generally think he knows his stuff - it's a bit soon to intervene too much? I wouldn't say that 4.5 is late, although I know that you say your DD wants to be dry.

My son is 4.9 and pretty similar, though. We've tried a few different approaches (more drinks in the day, less in the evening, just water and milk, lifting), with little effect. He sleeps heavily and so he usually wakes up with a wet nappy.

If she is genuinely distressed about being wet, would you 'lift' her? By which I mean take her to the toilet at about 11pm. I don't think that helps with bladder control, but it might keep her dry. I don't know how much distress is reasonable; part of me wonders if it might be a pre cursor to dryness (that awareness, I mean), but I wouldn't want my son to be upset. Sadly/happily, he doesn't care much either way.

Have you tried removing the nappy? I did for a week and we had 2 dry nights, followed by 5 wet ones. At that point, I decided to wait a bit longer before trying again.

Hi, thanks for your post D I have tried lifting but she is usually wet before 10 and still wets again in the night. Like you I tried no pullup thinking she might just not realise she is wet because the nappy keeps it mostly away from the skin until its soaked and had the same result 2 dry 5 wet nights. Her understanding is (by HV assessment not mine) 1.5y ahead, so she is getting distressed about it, despite telling her all the usual its really common, I did it etc.

Aw ... it must be pretty distressing for you both. Is she dry in the day?

The other piece of anecdotal advice I've heard is that it helps to make sure a child is well hydrated with water in the day, stopping at about 5pm. This (apparently) trains the bladder throughout the day, but reduces the level of urine created in the night.

But if you were later to train, she is very likely to be the same, as you say. So I don't know what you can do x
