Help! Stuck in night training nightmare

Ds1 is 3yo. He's been potty trained since last September. With the recent arrival of ds2 he decided he didn't want to wear nappies at night. He's had LOADS of dry night nappies so I was quite pleased.

But now he's wetting the bed every night. He can sleep through it and wake up wet in the morning.

He's getting sore where his pyjama shorts are.

We're encouraging wees before bed, and even tried 'lifting' but I have now read that it doesn't help long term (on ERIC).

He doesn't want to go back into nappies but I don't want to wash his bedclothes every day.

Plus I don't understand why we are having accidents than we used to have dry nappies.

Any clever ideas? Should we just keep going? I didn't realise what a minefield this was. I thought it was like potty training - dur.

no i'd just put him back in nappies

At 3 he's old enough to understand that wetting means you have to wash the bedclothes and wearing night nappies saves you time and effort. If not, I'd get him to help you strip the bed, put it all in the washing machine etc. - you can do this in a matter-of-fact way not a punishment type of way or being cross with him, but just so he gets what it is you have to do.

Then say you can get special big boy night-time pants that catch the wee and save all the hassle. You can get special night ones and even some for much older boys that look like pj shorts from the outside - we used these for DS. they have a pic of a big boy on them which might encourage him.

here scroll down for the "sleep shorts"

TIY - he won't go back in nappies. I have asked in a very low key way. He is very stubborn. If I try and force him, it will be horrific.

Marine - the shorts look great, and it's a good idea to get him to help strip the bed in the morning. Will try that tomorrow (or not hopefully!).

Anyone else?

You cannot 'train' a child to be dry at night, at some point between 2 and 8 they start to make a hormone that will allow them to be so.

Ds is almost 6 and still in nappies, he goes through long periods of being dry but is still not reliable, he was dry in the day by his second birthday.

Dd was dry at night just before her second birthay 5 months ago, dry in the day several months before, she has never had an accident.

You just have to go with it and personally I think you have to find a way to make wearing nappies easy for him to accept, be that rewards, bribes, sticker charts surely ^something will float his boat?

well ds was dry last night. Does that mean he does produce the hormone? I don't think he got up in the night for a wee.

We didn't make a fuss. I did go in at 10pm and lift him but he didn't do a wee.

I guess we keep going......
