Labour caused Foot Drop

Mabel1996 · 25/01/2026 06:50

I’m a first time mum with a 2 week old.
During a long labour, I chose to have one leg in a stirrup as I had an epidural and I felt I needed some resistance but didn’t want both legs in stirrups.

Once the epidural wore off I realised that the leg which had been in a stirrup was numb on the outside of the leg and wrapped round to the top of my foot and toes meaning I can’t flex my foot upwards making walking very difficult.
Can anyone shed any light on when I will regain feeling and the ability to flex my foot again. It’s really getting me down as I’m not able to drive or get out and walk with my newborn.

The hospital did arrange a MRI scan and a neurologist to have a look who has just advised to have some physio, I just want to recover asap and ideally be able to run again.
Thanks

Have you had any nerve conduction tests? Physio will probably focus on relieving any pressure on your sciatic nerve and down your leg.

I had foot drop which crept up gradually, i mean by that i didnt notice until i started to stumble and realised i had lost some sensation in my right leg between my knee and ankle on the outer right side.
Had a nerve conduction test to confirm trapped nerve below my knee.
Probably due to a long term joint condition but not 100% this is the cause.
Time and gentle stretching has helped me to the point it has improved.
Still having an MRI scan to check all is okay, but it can improve on its own so don't be too disheartened.
Congratulations on your new baby and take all the advice you can from your heathcare team, take some well deserved time for yourself and your little one
