Is this normal postpartum hair loss?

I’ve always had incredibly thick hair so actually in pregnancy, it didn’t seem any thicker (but it was stronger). I’m now 3 months PP and have noticed this bald patch on the nape of my neck. Is this normal or do I need to see the GP? I’m absolutely horrified, I didn’t realise I would have bald patches like this.

Is this normal postpartum hair loss?

It's hard to say, I also have fairly thick hair and lost lots of hair postpartum. I've always had a small bald patch near my temple where my hair is parted on a daily basis. The postpartum hairloss definitely made it larger and more noticeable.

If it's completely random and wasn't thinner there before pregnancy then it might be worth asking the GP?

I had overall loss ( so did many friends)
I'd go to gp get bloods done ignore gp saying its "normal" and look at actual results particularly folic acid iron and vit d

You want to be mid / upper end of the band not near the bottom

Doesn’t sound normal to have a patch. I’ve suffered with hair loss previously, pp was very bad for me but I actually had underlying issues I wasn’t aware of- an underachieve thyroid and low ferritin (under 70 can mean hair loss despite GP saying a lower ferritin is ok). I now supplement iron daily because I have heavy periods. The good news is it does grow back but I’d seek help and tests

It is completely random, I’ve noticed a lot of hair shed but then I spotted this patch when I was washing my hair.

Thanks, I’ll get them checked.

I actually did have a borderline underactive thyroid pre-pregnancy which is now looking more overactive based on my last bloods so I wonder if there’s something in that.

@Gerbera55definitely explore that. And have your ferritin checked, even on my thyroid meds if my iron is low my hair comes out. My levels were 26, GP said all ok but paid to see private dermatologist and she said whilst that level is ok for general health, your hair is the last place to get iron so it’s not enough for hair health. Ideally it should be at least 100

Gerbera55 · 14/11/2025 15:30

I’ve been to the GP today to discuss my thyroid blood test so I mentioned the hair loss then. She has said she doesn’t think it’s related to my thyroid or being postpartum, but she’s referred be to a dermatologist. She’s also requested a full blood panel to see if there is anything going on there.
