HELP! - my GP wants to do electrocautery on my Csection incision

I’m 5 weeks post c section today. I visited my GP yesterday as I have noticed my incision, in the middle, weeps a bit (clear coloured) and has a slight unpleasant odour.

I already raised this with a midwife 10 days after my c section and they did a swab and diagnosed an infection and I’ve recently had a course of antibiotics however I went to my GP yesterday as the problem still persists.

my GP has done another swab and sent it off to check if there is still an infection but said to me the reason it is weeping in the middle is because part of the incision is open slightly and that this could take weeks/months to heal and is a risk of further infection and suggested she performs ‘iron cautery’ which I essentially understood to be a procedure hereby they burn off skin and it forms a scan and then it heals underneath?

has anyone had this done before by their GP and I particular their c section incision? It’s kind of freaking me out as I’m worried it’ll do more damage!

any thoughts of experiences appreciated!

My friend had silver nitrate done.
I think this is preferrable but dont quote me.

Spend sone time today doing research but make a decision and def get it sealed.

Separately... once properly healed use silicone strips on it amd massage it this helps prevent and reduce scar tissue forming (which can be problematic for future pregnancies and or later in life). No one tells women this and i dont know why!!!

so you went to the gp, the gp offered you a treatment and you’re freaking out? Do you want it to be sorted? If you don’t want it done don’t have it done but it will take a while without it to heal properly

My wound didn’t heal (haematoma)and was cleaned and dressed every day for 10 weeks by a visiting nurse. Eventually she said that the outer layers were healing faster than the inner layers so my GP used silver nitrate to burn off the outer layers. It wasn’t painful at all iirc (25 years ago) and after that the wound healed quite quickly.

There is so much research which shows that women's health, particularly around childbirth, is misunderstood, misdiagnosed and maltreated it's surely not unreasonable of the OP to want some reassurance from those who have been through this procedure.

I would question whether there are other treatment options. I had cauterisation performed on a wound inappropriately by the GP and it became very infected and problematic. I may just have been unlucky but I think you should be offered a discussion of options. Mine was a different type of wound but I’ve also ended up on IV antibiotics after a c section

I had my episiotomy scar ‘tidied’ up with the GP using a silver nitrate stick

Have you been discharged from maternity? If possible if want an opinion from an obstetrician who performs c sections.

Kamek · 04/11/2025 12:39

You need to check if they have swabbed for MRSA because I had that in my csection incision and it was weeping and opening. I wouldn't let them do anything with it until you know that
