C-Section Pain

Hiya

FTM. Had an emergency C-Section 8 days ago. Was healing well with mild discomfort pain for most part apart from first 2 days which were terrible. The past 24 hours have become increasingly sore and painful, skin extremely sore to touch the whole lower part of stomach going into my sides. Also a sharp searing & stabbing pain randomly radiating internally across the incision area and going around my sides- I would currently rate the pain attacks a 7/8 out of 10 and getting worse. Is this normal? I have absolutely no idea how painful it’s supposed to be this long after the surgery and it seemed to be ok up until yesterday. I’m on regular painkillers which isn’t making any difference to the pain now. It’s not red or swollen from what my partner can see, it looks ok.

Grateful for any input from personal experiences, will be calling Dr tomorrow if it persists/gets worse.

thank you !!

You poor thing, that sounds awful. Definitely call your doctor first thing and say you need to be seen the same day. You can’t mess around with this stuff, post op pain like that isn’t good and you’ve got a huge part of your insides in the very early stages of healing. It’s good your incision doesn’t seem to look infected but the pain you describe sounds like my post EMCS infection which I remember years later, it was fucking grim.

Please speak to your doctor Asap and if they cant see you please go to a and E. Sounds like an internal infection.

I hope you get seen soon and relief from pain.

Really sorry that you are so sore. That isn’t normal from my experience but equally I was still in hospital by day 8 with both of them so was very limited. Have you been doing a bit more movement wise today? I know that others have shared that they have been a lot more sore after over doing it but what you described sounds extremely painful.

is there a triage line or similar at your maternity hospital you can contact? Am sure ours is open to call for 6 weeks after birth. Might be worth seeking advice.

I had similar, by day 6/7/8 I was walking a little better so I was obviously walking more as a result. The pain was awful it just got worse every day, especially the sharp attacks, it turned out I had a "pulled stitch", one of the internal ones where it was knotted (or something to that affect), was just too tight! I had to rest and take recovery a lot slower than I was hoping x
Ring GP or midwife tomorrow, definitely worth getting checked out x

Please contact the delivery suite where you delivered, it is possible they will ask you to attend there for review as you are so recently post-partum. There will be someone there 24 hours a day so please call them tonight for advice, if that’s not your unit’s policy they will advise you how to get help. Hope you feel better soon.

I really feel for you. I found c section recovery awful, and some of what you describe I think is normal but I'd get the increasing searing pain checked out. It might be you've over exerted yourself or an infection. I found that when I went for walks even 6 weeks later I'd be in pain. I was also given antibiotics for an infection but couldn't see much redness myself. Take the recovery really slow, and you will get there. I didn't really start feeling better, like I was on the other side, until around 3 months in.

I had a c-section 3 weeks ago and it was incredibly painful, especially to one side. It was a sharp shooting type pain and I couldn’t do much at all. I think yours sounds worse and so I would get some advice - MAU / your doc / midwife? Always better to make sure - it’s hard to know what’s normal if you’ve not had one before, and from speaking to other mums it’s seems like people’s experiences vary widely. Just to reassure you - my pain is now loads better and 2 weeks seemed to be a bit of a turning point for me.

Worsening pain is sign of infection. Get seen immediately.

passmeaglass · 15/10/2025 09:17

This doesnt sound like my experience. By that stage I still had to move slowly and be careful sitting up - rolling to the side rather than straight up but the pain I felt from doing that was more like I’d overdone sit ups. I was on painkillers for 2 weeks after mine but it was more sore than shooting or searing pains

Sunshiney2021 · 15/10/2025 12:33

Thanks all. I have booked an appointment with my doctor today just to get it checked out!

What did the doctor say? Are you feeling better?
