Looking for advice on how to get period back when still breastfeeding. Now 11 months post partum and only feeding once/twice a day. Very keen to get period back so we can start trying for number 2. Any advice would be welcome!

You know you get pregnant even without periods returning?

get your body in tip top condition and then it will happen. Vitamin d levels. Ferritin. Folate. Etc. Enough sleep. Fit. Strong. Healthy.
focus on those and the rest wil follow.

fwiw I bf both kids to 2y / & beyond. Periods returned between 10 and 14months but still a large gap despite not using contraception.

get your body healthy and it will happen sooner rather than later.

best of luck!

Agree with pp, you definitely don’t need your period back to conceive, looking at you DC2 👀

Are you doing any night feeds? I found my AF returned when I put them in their own room and the night feeds reduced.

And have a read of this from Kellymom on BFing and returning fertility Smile

My periods returned after 13 weeks with dc 1.. which infuriated me lol but they were sooo irregular and we got pregnant with dc2 without a period.. so.. it’s possible.

Both of mine are exbf but with dc 2 I’m 9m pp and haven’t had a period come back… I’m assuming it’ll happen once we start dropping feeds but she doesn’t feed as often or as long as dc1

see your doctor- they should be able to help

What will the GP do? Genuinely don’t know.

@BunnyRuddingtonGP should be able to either give you some pointers OR refer you where you can get support. My GP is amazing.. I know it’s not the case everywhere

A long haul flight combined with the stress of moving counties made mine return.

It maybe that breastfeeding even a small amount is enough suppression to hold your hormones at bay.

You can start trying and see what happens.

Not 100% sure if it was this or just luck but I got mine back when I ate loads and loads- but good healthy stuff. Lots of meat and veg etc made sure I covered vitamins and protein. I had read your body won’t bring back your periods until it feels it can support a new baby and the current one(s). Good luck!

This is helpful, thank you! Have also read about this! Did you actively put on weight? I know how much pregnancy/breastfeeding can deplete you so something for me to consider xx

This is amazing if true! Don’t think mine will ever come back then 🤣🤣🤣

SarahT1234 · 05/09/2025 22:20

I think it’s more making sure you have the nutrients and also the calories to support an additional child. Not sure about hr weight as I got pregnant not too long after.

Just be warned (didn’t affect me) but there’s something like a 1 in 10 chance of multiples (twins, triplets etc) if you get pregnant whilst breastfeeding, so weigh that up 😂

Was the article from Kellymom helpful at all @rmorris95?

Hiya! Thanks so much for sharing. It was really helpful and highlights that the chances of conceiving when still breastfeeding/even after first period can be pretty low. Will just have to be patient. Many thanks!

Hi op and ladies!
I'm at the same boat, breastfeeding at 13 months pp (mostly for baby to fall asleep and comfort), no period, low hormones. I have pcos too.

In my case conception is unlikely as low estrogen and progesterone and causing the uterine lining to stay thin, so nowhere for implantation to happen.
I am on myoinositol supplements, hoping it will help.
Of course depending on the body some women have got pregnant while bf. My mom did so at 6 m pp while bf, without her period.
