4 weeks pp - sudden heavy bleeding

Had emergency c section 4 weeks ago. All is going well with the recovery, perhaps been doing a little too much at times. Yesterday morning I was changing baby and felt a sudden flood. Ran to the toilet and there was so much blood. Figured I’d started my period, thought it was quite soon even though baby is on formula, and brushed it off. Anyway, I was up half the night with extremely heavy bleeding, blood on the floor and bedsheets. My partner took me to A&E at 5am, the gynaecology team refused to see me saying it sounded like a period, nurse said perhaps I don’t remember what a period is like? Fair enough, I am a first time mum so I don’t know exactly what to expect, but I can’t shake the fear that something isn’t right. I feel so weak and tired I don’t even feel I can do basic things for baby, I’m dizzy when I stand, I’m soaking through a pad in less than an hour, when I stand up it gushes out I have to run to the loo and just sit there until the water is pretty much red.

Was anyone else’s first period like this? I was made to feel so stupid and time wasting at A&E I feel like I darent go back. This is all new to me and I’m struggling to trust my instincts vs professional judgement!

This doesn’t sound right at all. I’ve had 2 C sections and not experienced anything like this. It’s normal for your bleeding to ebb and flow a bit but the amount of blood and your other symptoms are worrying. I would definitely go back and get checked. Trust your gut. Wishing you all the best!

Thank you! I feel like I needed to post to hear from somebody else that it doesn’t sound right, if you know what I mean. They didn’t do any tests at A&E at all, so I think I’ll ask for them to check me over. Thank you x

Also I’d take pics and videos and even your soaked through pads to show them the amount of blood

Call the maternity ward NOW.
I had something that sounds very similar, turned out to be retained placenta. I lost consciousness due to blood loss but thank goodness had called an ambulance by then on advice from the labour ward.

I saw a video on Instagram about a woman this happened to, and like you she kept being fobbed off with it being her first period! It wasn’t. It ended up being retained placenta. Go back to A&E, and don’t leave until they scan you.

I was taken by ambulance to the maternity hospital at 8 days pp for similar symptoms. Also turned out to be retained placenta.
