Extreme weight loss postpartum

I gained 2kg in pregnancy but have lost 12kg since having my baby via c-section 3 weeks ago. I have had a lack of appetite but this concerned me so I went to the GP who basically said it’s normal and “just eat.” I haven’t been this weight for many years, my pre pregnancy clothes are actually a bit big for me now.

Am I overreacting if I ask to see a different GP or is this truly normal? Everything I’ve read says getting back to prepregnancy weight can take time, and I’m 10kg below that 3 weeks postpartum.

Personally I would see someone else. Rapid weightloss is always worth investing. It could.just be you. Someone women struggle to maintain a healy weight post birth.

I would definitely go back. Ask gp to do bloods to check your thyroid - not uncommon for childbirth to trigger issues (happened to me and my sister, one hypothyroid and one hyper).

Yes I would go back too. I hope it’s nothing OP but it’s worth keeping an eye on. 2kg is a low gain in pregnancy, why do you think this was?

Are you naturally slim and are you breastfeeding? I lost loads of weight very quickly after having my baby, although possibly not as much as you. Have you lost 12kg since after having the baby or 'including' the baby?

Always good to get a second opinion and make sure youre ok, especially with a loss of appetite. If you are breastfeeding a hungry baby you may need to massively increase how much you're eating.

I found I managed to keep my weight level all while I was breastfeeding - my body must have thought it needed to hold into some weight - but as soon as I stopped breastfeeding I became extremely thin. The same happened with my sister. After a year or two we both got back up to normal weight again.

If you were overweight before the pregnancy, this all sounds normal to me: the low weight gain during, and the 12 kg lost after.
However, if you were of a normal weight, and especially if you feel something is not quite right, do seek a second opinion.
