Headache

Has anyone suffered with headaches after childbirth?
I gave birth on the 7th and have had a constant headache since that doesn't ease up.
I'm pretty sure it's not a spinal headache.

Are you meeting with HV any time soon? I woild definitely mention it to them.

doodahdayy · 16/05/2025 18:10

Are you drinking enough water? How much are you sleeping? Like pp I would definitely speak to your hv or call gp. Can you speak to a midwife? Someone may be able to give advice.

It can be a sign of prelampsia. You need to ring the ring the birthing unit.

Did you have epidural?

Beccaa123 · 16/05/2025 18:55

My Ob tested me for preeclampsia because of it and it was negative.
I did have a spinal.
I live in Abu Dhabi, so we don't have a health visitor or midwife team that support. I guess my option would be to go and see a neurologist

Make that call to a neurologist. There are quite a few possible reasons but some are quite serious. Mine was intracranial hypertension (IIH) where the cerebral fluid doesn't adequately drain resulting in pressure on the optic nurse headache, diarrhoea, etc. It could just be stress related but it needs checking out.

Does it improve when you lie down? A post Dural puncture headache generally eases when lying down. I would notify your obstetric anaesthetist because they would probably want to rule this out.

I suffered headaches caused by the change in hormones, after every pregnancy and miscarriage. But also, the last one could have been to do with high blood pressure. Please see the GP

Creamteasandbumblebees · 16/05/2025 21:24

Yes, I had a splitting headache. The doctor said it was normal after an epidural.
3 weeks later I still had it, couldn't take anything for it as I was breastfeeding. My health visitor and GP didn't offer any solutions other than rest (with a newborn - I dont think so!) Hydrate and get plenty of fresh air! My blood pressure was fine.
I went to see a Chiropractor who said my neck and back were out of alignment, he really gently manipulated me back into place and the next day my headache was gone. He said it was a common problem after pregnancy/birth.

Please go straight to the hospital if this is postnatal pre eclampsia or some sort of womb infection/retained placenta you could get really sick really fast!!

Littlebigcat · 17/05/2025 00:58

In very rare cases it could be a sign of a CVST, which would be diagnosed via an MRV or CTV scan. Do go and get checked out, it's probably more likely to be something less serious bit I wouldn't ignore it

PollyannaGladGame · 17/05/2025 10:08

Please go and see someone...

Around two weeks in I had a bad headache and felt flu like, I mentioned it to the health and she told me I was tired etc - I wasn't convinced as he was a dream baby. I was young and had felt fine literally straight away.

Anyway, it was retained placenta which had caused an infection, I haemorrhaged that night and was blue lighted in. All was fine and this was almost 20 years ago but it terrified me TBH, and I still have a dreadful fear of blood from it.

I was so aware with subsequent babies and still go on at new mums to get checked out if they don't feel well - you shouldn't feel poorly like this.

Take care. X

Are you breastfeeding? It could be a sign of dehydration if you’re not drinking enough water

Beccaa123 · 17/05/2025 13:37

Thanks everyone.
I am going to get checked out tomorrow.
I've already been checked for preeclampsia because of it.
I am breastfeeding, it may just be exhaustion/dehydration.
I did have an emergency C-section so I guess it could be a spinal headache
