Lost sensation to pee/poop

Catk34 · 12/05/2025 12:36

I had an emergency section 11 days ago.
I’ve lost the sensation for weeing and pooping.
I’ve just had a call from dr saying my bloods are showing that my kidneys are under stress.
i would suspect it’s because I’m hardly peeing and my bladder is getting super full before I go for a pee. The other day I took my underwear down and immediately peed all over the floor, I think my bladder must have been so full it couldn’t even hold it to get to the toilet.
Im really worried this will never go away. I’m having such a hard time PP - Dangergously high blood pressure, potential infection I need to get tested for and this too… I’m yet to have a day I haven’t been in hospital and I just want to be able to enjoy my little boy :(

I would go to A and E immediately and I say that very rarely on MN.

What did the doctor suggest? In the meantime, set an alarm for every couple of hours to go for a pee and make sure you are keeping drinking. It’s probably just some bladder shock from the catheter and residual numbness from the c-section but it’s important you tell doctor and midwife about it and ask them what next steps are - did they have you pass urine etc before discharge? Are you having midwife visits at home still?

I had this after my second, forceps delivery. You need to make sure you do your pelvic floor exercises even if you can't feel it. I'm not sure if the physical cause is the same, but the emotional impact will be.

It's awful, I'll never forget how gutted I was when I thought I'd be wetting myself for life. But that didn't happen, it got much better. It's early days, and with hormones it is really distressing.

Set an alarm on your phone to make sure you go to the toilet regularly. Because even if you can't feel it, you will need to go and empty your bladder. And drink plenty, don't let the fear of being incontinent limit your fluid intake.

Keep pushing for more input from the midwives/doctors as they need to check there's nothing causing your symptoms.

Also book in with the Women's Health Physio, as they will be able to help with recovery longer term.

It's so hard, and can feel really lonely as no one really talks about this. Sending love to you.

I would also go to a&e and i say that as an a&e nurse

MissMoneyFairy · 12/05/2025 12:46

You really need to be in hospital, personally I'd call an ambulance, did you have an epidural. When were the bloods taken that the gp called you about. When did you lose sensation,m

Catk34 · 12/05/2025 12:48

My blood pressure is now under control with meds and the Dr phoned this morning to get bloods redone for potential infection and kidney issue, I’m going in in a couple of hours. Hopefully results don’t take too long

Have you told the doctor about these issues? What did they say about it?

Wishiwasatailor · 12/05/2025 12:54

Another a&e nurse here I would be wanting to be seen by a doctor today either through gp or a&e

Catk34 · 12/05/2025 12:54

Bloods were taken on Friday that I was called about. All my bloods the days before were normal.
She said it was slightly raised platlets which could indicate a possible infection and kidneys look under some stress. Going back in at 3pm to get blood redone.
i have mentioned this problem to a couple of midwives and a dr but none seemed particularly concerned as long as I was still physically able to pee, which I am if I sit on the toilet - I just forget to go because I don’t feel the need.
the blood pressure is now under control. I was in and out of triage multiple times last week until they eventually gave me a prescription for that

To see a doctor for all the issues or anything in particular? I’ve mentioned the lack of sensation to multiple midwives and a dr but none seemed too concerned as long as I was still physically able to pee - which I can if I actually remember to sit on the toilet

This isn’t normal OP I’d be going to A&E.

doodleschnoodle · 12/05/2025 13:03

I’d set a timer then and go for a pee at set intervals. It would definitely be an emergency if you couldn’t pass urine, but loss of sensation does sometimes happen post-delivery. Definitely make sure doctor knows it’s still persisting though as they will want to see improvement in a certain timeframe and if it’s not getting better, you might need further intervention. But try to get into habit (I know it’s difficult with a newborn!) of going to the toilet regularly when the alarm goes off in the meantime to help your kidneys and make sure you are drinking enough too.

LoafofSellotape · 12/05/2025 13:06

I don't want to frighten you OP but a member of my family had similar symptoms ( not post Natal though) and is now paralysed as there was a delay in being treated. PLEASE go to A and E immediately x

Catk34 · 12/05/2025 13:08

I called triage and they said to mention it when I get my bloods taken this afternoon so a dr can review me

How did you get on OP?

rainbowrosalie · 12/05/2025 22:17

I had this after my first baby (forceps, high trauma, epidural, catheter etc). But it went after 3/4 days, I can’t remember exactly when but it must’ve been by then the sensation to go came back, as I had to be peeing normally before they were happy for me to go home. I came home 4 days after baby was born.

Definitely not ok for you still to be having this, I would want to be seen urgently and immediately. Hope you are ok.

Catk34 · 25/05/2025 10:35

All okay, none of the drs or midwives seemed particularly concerned about it. One of the doctors had a name for it (I forgot what it was) and said it can take up to 8 weeks to return to normal and I have to retrain the bladder by making sure to keep remembering to go to the bathroom regularly. She explained the weight of the baby pushing down can do things to the nerves and it takes time to improve. My baby weighed close to 11lbs at birth so it was quite a bit of weight! It’s improved a lot since then, I’d say about 70% back to normal, they have arranged a bladder ultrasound to make sure I’m emptying completely when I go.

Also… blood pressure has returned to normal and no longer need the meds, kidneys are normal. Everything going in the right direction now. My body just seemed to have a total freak out after having baby boy, I’ve still got weekly checkups with the doctors at the maternity hospital, so we’re keeping an eye on things
