Hi everyone. My daughter just turned 14 and quite often when her birthday rolls around I find myself thinking about her birth.I just really want to know if anyone else experienced what I did as I feel like I don’t fully understand it or maybe I should just try to stop thinking about it and move forwards?! I know others have experienced much worse.Everything was normal during pregnancy. Her birth was long and they seemed to give me every drug going as my waters had broke and they wanted to stop infection.Immediately after birth I swelled up considerably. My face, arms and legs were quadruple their size and I could barely see my eyes in the mirror.I was vomiting and had double vision. Then everything got a bit scary.People were talking in words but I couldn’t understand them.I’m a speech therapist and I remembered learning about this on my course-I think it’s called receptive Aphasia.I could talk but I couldn’t understand what others were saying.I’m not sure how long this lasted but it was probably under 20 minutes. This whole experience made me cry out for my baby,I couldn’t make sense of my thoughts but I needed her right next to me.I think I felt so powerless and confused. The next few days were fuzzy and neither myself or my daughter were with it.I found it really hard to let relatives hold her and wanted to be with her every second.I asked the hospital for a debrief about 6 months later. They explained they had lost my notes and that it was probably just my hormones reacting after the birth.Does everyone feel so very different after birth? I’ve since gone on to have 2 other children but not had the same issues and the same changes.I’ve felt different since that first birth. My reactions and thought processes are slower,I can’t find words so easily.Has anyone experienced anything like this?

I’m sorry you went through this and that you still have unanswered questions. It will be hard to comment without the detail from your notes unfortunately. It could be that you had sepsis (bad infection), swelling can sometimes happen in that setting if you are given a lot of fluids to try to keep your blood pressure up when you’re in septic shock. It could also be that you had pre eclampsia or even eclampsia, do you recall having any seizures? Sometimes pre eclampsia can cause brain symptoms, vision changes etc. If you think you’ve had changes in your brain function since then (word finding and reaction times etc) then it might be worth checking in with your GP to see if that can formally be assessed. All the best.
