Pregnancy affected eyesight

I’ve always had regular eye check ups

Before having children my eye sight was perfect, no prescription at all.

After my first child in 2021 Age 25, there was a notable difference, things seemed a bit hazy long distance when they’d never before. Went to the opticians and my sight had deteriorated slightly, I now had a prescription. But I didn’t really need to wear them I was still ok driving etc.

I had my second child 6 months ago Age 28 now and I noticed my sight had again deteriorated further! Went to the opticians and I had a new prescription showing how much it had changed. I told the optometrist my concerns about me now having to glasses more often than not annd the sudden decrease within an 3 year span and was laughed at. He said there are people so much worse off which I understand but to have perfect vision to then not being able to drive without my glasses because I’m struggling to read big signs/reg plates in front. My kids faces look blurry when I’m looking at them from across the room! I’m genuinely worried. He said having children your hormones can affect your eyesight but everyone I talk to has not experienced this so I’m reaching out on mumsnet.

Has having kids affected your eyesight?

Should I get a second opinion? I only had the eye test 2 months ago but I feel it’s still deteriorating and it’s scaring me.

It’s probably not linked to pregnancy though. Most people who have glasses could see perfectly several years prior.

I agree with the first reply. My sight started going down at 25. The optician said that 25 is a classic age to first need glasses. I think it’s coincidence. I can’t drive without glasses either and I don’t have any children. I’m sorry you’re struggling with the change from how you were before but I don’t think it’ll be pregnancy related.

I was told not to do eye tests while pregnant as they change and then change back

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 21/02/2025 09:43

But you do need to be able to see to drive safely

This is actually very good to hear. The amount of people that have said to me Oh but you’re so young! Had only increased my anxiety.

I could have written the same but I had my first child at 42 and it's far more common to start needing glasses in your 40s.

The optician said it used to be older but because of all the screens we use then mid 20s is very normal. That was 12 years ago too and my sight has barely deteriorated since then. I’m only +0.75 and -0.75 in both eyes now but I was +0.25 and -0.25 in both eyes 12 years ago.
