Thinning sphincter muscles post birth

Hello.

I'm writing this a little embarrassed but I'm waiting to see a colorectal surgeon and want to know what to expect whilst i wait.

I had a baby last year and since had issue with faecal inconvenience. I have an urge but it sometimes is too late and I don’t make it to the loo. This is heightened when exercising. I have spent months doing kegel exercises with no improvement.

After a recent MRI i have been told by a gynaecologist that they’ve picked up muscle thinning of the Sphincter muscle so need to refer me to the colon team. I asked what the treatment would be and he said he couldn’t say but likely to need surgery or an implant.

Has anyone else suffered anything similar and had treatment. It would great to know if there are other ways other than surgery.

I would ask for another opinion, perhaps talk to a post birth physio? Need to look at birth notes to see what happened.

Agree you should see a women's physio, privately if necessary.

Kegels are only effective if done properly and there is so much more you can do to strengthen and protect those muscles. GPs can usually get you referred for a women's physio specialist.
