Increase in lochia

Hey everyone,
just looking for some reassurance. I’m 14 days post partum. My bleeding seemed to subside slightly, but since yesterday it’s heavier again and I’m changing my pad every 2-3 hours. It’s like when you first start your period. No clots or anything untoward.
I am feeling anxious as I thought it was coming to end. I had a post partum haemorrhage and ended up having 2 units of blood so I’m feeling really anxious what if I have a secondary haemorrhage even though it’s just like a heavy period again.
is it normal for lochia to stop then start?

I had exactly this and it turned out to be retained placenta. Do you know if your placenta was intact?

stackhead · 23/08/2024 13:29

Did you do more than usual before it started heavier again? Walk a bit more, bend more than usual, some heavier housework?

It's bleeding from a wound so any heavier or just 'more' activity can make the bleeding start up again whilst it's healing.

And perfectly normal.

I was so out of it, but I know they gave me an injection for the placenta and it came out and was checked

Yes, the last couple of days have been a turning point with my recovery and I’ve done quite a lot more housework. Yesterday I sorted out lots of clothes and stuff, despite my husband telling me to stop 😂 today I’ve been for a small walk. I don’t feel like I’m overdoing it though, I’ve been careful with what I’m doing

It’s common to see an increase in bleeding with increased physical activity - but double check with your midwife if you’re still under their care or your GP.

This is a classic time for secondary post partum haemorrhage.

You need to call your midwife.

The first time I drove and the first time I hoovered it increased and I felt very worried. So I stopped hoovering 😂. Jokes aside, I was told hoovering is a particular one to avoid because of the one sided twisting and pushing. Puts a lot of pressure on your middle and core.

Thankyou all. I phoned MAU and they said it all sounds very normal and not to worry! They explained it as a scab from where the placenta was, and because I’ve been more active the scab has been knocked and that’s where the bleeding has started up again. All very normal, and gave me some warning signs to watch out for and to ring and go in if I get any
