Telling hospital we don’t actually live in the area - impact on first midwife visit etc?

We used to live in area A. We are still registered with the GP there and have had all midwife appointments there. I’ll be giving birth at the hospital there.

However, we actually live in Area B, a completely different NHS trust etc.

I found out recently that a midwife will come and visit the home within 24 hours after us leaving the hospital with the new baby. Eek! What’s the best way to approach this? How much notice would Area B midwives need to do the first visit to a new person in their area?

(There are very good reasons why we haven’t moved our medical care across to Area B, where we currently live.)

Most gps require you to move practice if you leave the area, How do you receive your correspondence? It should be possible to arrange for for a local mw to visit but may not be immediate. Health visitors who take over visits after about 10 days and run baby and post natal clinics are usually allocated by gp surgeries though.

This sounds very risky. How far are you from Hospital A?

ladycardamom · 13/08/2024 11:23

I did that and just gave my new address when I went into have baby. They swapped over to my new local midwives for post natal care.

Only five mins more drive than hospital B, just in opposite directions.

Community midwife here.
It isn't an issue.
Just give your discharge address to the midwives when you go to hospital. Make sure that it is correct when you are discharged.
The clerks will ring or email the visit to the relevant teams. No problem at all.

jellybe · 13/08/2024 11:32

They will check what address you are going home to after having baby and make sure that the right team comes to see you.

cheeseycrumpet · 13/08/2024 11:36

Thanks so much @ThisMustBeMyDream - so a midwife from Area A won’t be scheduled to go to the old house? They will only get their day’s visit details from the hospital’s discharge notes?

(ps I recognised your username - I hope today’s the day ☺️!)

Not the same situation but I live on the border of two countries and two different health boards. The hospital in my county is 45 mins away where as the hospital in the next county is 15 mins away. Although I did have the baby in my country hospital, many people in the area do not due to the shorter distance and they have no problem getting community midwives care after. I assume the GPs have your new address anyway?

cheeseycrumpet · 13/08/2024 11:44

No, @dhxxx for all healthcare we are still fully registered in Area A.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 So do I. So do bloody I 🤣🙈.
Occasionally the details can be given to the wrong team, but it will quickly be batted back to the right place! The discharges are rang out (or emailed) in the morning (usually before 10am to give sufficient time for the days visits!). As long as you give the correct address on discharge it will all be sorted!
Good luck with the birth 😄
