Postnatal vaginal 'laxity' anyone else got experience of this?

I had a very straightforward vaginal delivery 5 months ago and have seen a private women's health physio as I thought I had a prolapse as was feeling a 'bulge' sensation. She examined me and I definitely don't have a prolapse but vaginal wall laxity (anterior and posterior)

She's given me some exercises to do.

I'm finding the sensation uncomfortable and things definitely don't feel the same down there (I appreciate this is to be expected to some extent). I also sometimes feel like I have a bubble of air in my vagina and it's so annoying!

I just wanted to know if anyone had experienced this before?
Did it get better over time with exercises?
Did it get worse after more deliveries?
Did it change after you'd finished breastfeeding?

Sorry for all the questions! Thanks

I'd say it took a good year to get back to normal after my CS birth. Less after a VB, bizarrely.

I had this feeling in the first few weeks. I also saw a pelvic health physio who noted some laxity. It went away pretty quickly but I was very diligent with the pelvic floor exercises and also getting back to normal exercise - yoga, rock climbing, gym etc. By around 10 weeks I felt totally back to normal. I have no idea if the exercise helped or I’d have got there anyway.

OP, how are you doing? I am six weeks postpartum and feeling the same, it's so annoying 😳 I did have the same after my first child which definitely did go away but it took some time, I hope it goes away this time too!

Also following with interest, I'm nearly 4 weeks pp with my second (2x vaginal births) and I feel the bulging / heavy / dragging sensations. Doing kegels 3x a week and seeing GP for assessment on Monday.

@Borgonzola will you let me know how you get on tomorrow please? My baby is my second vaginal birth also and honestly I can't believe how much my body has changed, I feel so down about it at the moment!

Borgonzola · 09/03/2025 19:52

Yup. Thought I'd been doing ok with the Kegels etc but went for a longish walk today (relative to recently, barely any distance by my previous standards) and felt so heavy / bulbous by the end Sad

Borgonzola · 09/03/2025 19:54

Previous message should have been Kegels 3x per DAY not week ...

Justanothermum9421 · 09/03/2025 21:21

Oh no 😔 I'm not sure if I'm imagining my symptoms or not to be honest, some times I think it's just health anxiety and other times I am certain I feel something! I am also doing kegels 3x a day but not sure if it's made a difference or not. I really feel for you, postpartum can be brutal, I don't know about you but I feel as though I'm in a stranger's body.

GP was very supportive, did an internal examination and confirmed that there is some prolapse and also 'tested' some of the muscles to see where I need to improve and guided me on where to tense. Very helpful and I feel more positive now. I don't think I was doing kegels 100% properly (really hard to know) so will likely now try to see a pelvic physio so I can ensure I'm doing things properly

This is my current situation, air bubble, bulge. However I have been diagnosed with prolapse.
