Should I speak to a gp about weight loss?

So I’m 6 months postpartum and my weight is really taking a toll now.
prior to baby I was really healthy. 5”4 and 9 stone. I didn’t put much on during the pregnancy, didn’t eat for two (in fact I couldn’t really eat in the first trimester). After birth I pretty much went straight back to my normal size until my first period. My first period was around the 3 month mark and the weight has just sky rocketed. Im now 13 stone! I don’t know where it’s come from. I eat really healthy, I workout at least 5 times a week but I’m still not budging with the weight.
I know it can be harder to lose baby weight but idek if this is baby weight due to how it happened. I literally had my first period and then my jeans wouldn’t fit, I thought I shrunk them in the wash and bought the same pair in the same size but no, I genuinely went up a size in a week?! Even my partners confused because he saw my body and my habits and agrees it doesn’t make sense.

so should I go to the gp? Has anyone else experienced similar? Idk what to do and rn I hate leaving the house, it’s so horrid

I had similar. I have started to input calories and although I thought I was eating healthily I was consuming a lot more calories than I thought. Exercise has a minimal effect on weight, diet is the main thing.

Are you on any hormonal birth control? I would see the GP actually, for gaining several stone in a few months with no obvious cause.

My periods are also a lot more painful. I came on Tuesday and I’m having pain similar to contractions. Could it be hormone based?

Measure your food for a few days first to see how much you're really eating. You're almost certainly absent mindedly eating more than you think.

No, not on birth control. They tried to push it but I don’t react the best to it. I’ll deffo book in with the gp though!

I am weighing out my portions, using my fitness pal. I’m not consuming more than 1800 a day. Thinking maybe I’ll have to cut it down even more?

Unexplained weight gain can be a symptom of thyroid dysfunction (fairly common in postnatal women). Do you have any of these other symptoms? I would recommend seeing the GP (if you can get an appointment…)

nhs.uk

Read about the symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), including tiredness, weight gain, depression and increased sensitivity to cold.

I would def go to the doctor, quite urgently. If as you say your eating habits haven’t changed and you actually went back to your pre pregnancy weight soon after birth then something needs to be checked.

This has happened to me too! After birth I was only 3kg heavier than pre baby. I ate healthily and exercised throughout pregnancy. 10kg dropped off me by the time I was out of hospital!! About 2 months postpartum I was gaining slightly more than a kilo every 2 weeks. At 6 months I joined slimming world and have been exercising again. So far I've been putting it down to poor sleep as I had been doing all the nights but could no longer function so now have a rota so we share the nights. I'm losing weight but very slowly 10lb in 7 weeks. I hope you get to the bottom of it xx

despite the "periods" are you certain you are not pregnant again?

Hi lovely, didn’t end up going to the doctors, tried self medication instead at first. I’ve been managing stress levels by doing yoga every day and making sure to get in 3 cups of green tea. And then adding certain vitamins to my diet to aid my hormones. Focusing on core exercises like simple breathing exercises.
since this post and implementing these changes, I’ve lost a stone and a half!! Back into my old jeans and overall feeling less dead!! I think it was deffo a build up of stress and hormonal imbalance. I also stopped calorie counting and started focusing on actual nutrition and that’s helped a lot!
