Episiotomy

So this is most definitely going to be TMI.

I had an episiotomy 4 years ago at the birth of my son. Looking at the aftermath of how i got sewed up, it seems they sewed skin in there that shouldnt be there. Its been uncomfortable since it was done.

Am I right to approach the doctors to cut and re sew this issue, as birth is what caused it!

OP I had immense amount of pain within the first year and lots of bleeding around periods. No obgyn / GP could figure out as I was checked out at my 6 weeks check and nobody thought it was a problem. I kept persisting. Finally booked a surgeon. The surgeon did on me a silver nitrate stick which burned the excess skin that was hurting me and followed it with few steroid injections every 4-6 weeks 4 times to ease the pain , and ensure that it heals properly.

I was similar after my second DC was born.

Went to GP after a few months PP who referred me to gynaecology (however, in my notes she put emphasis on the fact that it still caused daily pain, as they don't accept every referral nowadays).

Took ages to see the surgeon but when I did she agreed with me and I had a date for surgery within a few weeks. All sorted now.

For the above reasons I am afraid of having a second child. It's scarred me.

had episiotomy with my first dc and the male doctor did a terrible job of stitching me. I was left with a small fold of flesh which looked like internal flesh at the opening of my vagina, I was in pain for months with some stitches coming open. didn't attempt sex for almost 1 year then when we did it was painful the first few times.
I tore with dc 2 and again needed stitches this time the female midwife did a fantastic job and corrected my messed up stitches. felt like I had a new vagina!

I had to have one with my eldest, but didn't need another with my youngest (who weighed 9lbs13oz I might add!!). I assumed I would need it but I was on! Don't let it put you off ❤️

Hi
sorry to hijack! Did those who had it repaired go with a private surgeon?

Badgersonthedoorstep · 29/05/2024 19:36

@FTMaz no, had it through nhs. It just took ages to get the first appointment but once I was seen, it was all fixed fairly quickly.

They don't accept every referral though. It depends on the damage and how much it affects your day to day life. So if they say no then private would be the only option.

I went through NHS. if I had money I would have gone to private sooner instead of being in pain all the time.

Yes as a PP said it took me 10 months to get surgeon appointment. Also i told them that I wasn't having any sex due to this. They seemed very concerned.

I only had after my DS was 1.5 years old. My DH was supportive.

Ah okay, do they examine you to make the decision or go on what you say? Surely it’s very subjective!

@FTMaz My GP had a look first and wrote everything she could see in my referral to gynecology. They then (eventually) reviewed it and decided if it sounds like it's worth seeing me. Then I got the appointment through to see the gynecology surgeon who also had a look and suggested how to fix it.
