Redux with Breastfeeding

Hi - I think my 3 week old baby has silent reflux. He does this crazy barking grunt when I lie him flat.

I see a lot written about formula thickening etc, should I switch from breastfeeding to formula to help the reflux?

No, It may not actually help. Has a cows milk protein allergy been looked at? Any other symptoms? Tongue tie?
you can get reflux medication but reflux is usually a symptom of something else not a diagnosis.

Formula can make things a lot worse, you can end up trying tons of them before you get to the bottom of it.

Are you winding during a feed? Bf babies do need winding despite what you’re told.

Can you get him checked for tongue tie and his latch with a bf consultant. Also I’d consider a dairy free diet for yourself because CMPA is really common in babies, it usually takes a couple of weeks for the dairy to clear out of your system but then if it is that you’ll see an improvement very quickly.

agree with PP it’s usually a symptom of something else. My little one had terrible reflux from 3 weeks old, which turned out to be shallow latch caused by tongue tie. Would be worth having a latch assessment done with a lactation consultant and a tongue tie assessment if you haven’t already!

Thanks for replying! I will get the tongue tie looked at, I had some difficulties early on with feeding, a lactation specialist said there was something there to snip but wasn't significant. Then things improved with different positioning and I didn't follow up on the TT. I am also on antibiotics for a wound infection and wonder if they are making him a bit grouchy in the tummy. I'm not seeing a lot of vomit, just loud grunting, knees up, stuffy nose and very difficult to settle mainly at night x

You can thickener breastmilk with gaviscon. You my mix a sachet of Powder with cooled boiled water and give it by syringe around the time of as feed. It's only available on prescription for under 1s. My daughter has been on it since 6 weeks and omperazole since 8 weeks she's now 3
