Bleeding and clots at 4 weeks postpartum

Hello,
Was just looking for reassurance that I’m not alone as health visitor said it’s normal, but just wanted to check with others too for when I can expect this to stop!

I’ve been bleeding constantly since having baby, started to taper off at 3 weeks but now back quite heavy again at 4 weeks. Passing clots and blood is bright red along with some sharp pain on one side.

Think im just looking for reassurance as all medical professionals have said it’s fine and not to worry but it seems unending!

What kind of birth did you have, I think that can impact how long you bleed for.

I bled for 11-12 weeks. I was anaemic but that was diagnosed before being discharged from the hospital on day 10.

I bled for a while with dc3, but it turned out I had a small amount of retained placenta which was causing it. I had a scan to confirm that. They just let me carry on as it wasn’t a lot and said it would probably flush itself out. Don’t think it’s particularly common though. Is this dc 1? Or subsequent?

Breastfeeding?
If not, probably a period

@GallowwayGirl88 C-section, I was anaemic at the time of birth (had an iron infusion the week before which helped) and narrowly avoided having a blood transfusion. I think that worries me with the bleeding as I have been feeling quite ropey the past few days with dizzy spells but it’s probably just lack of sleep!

@daisydalrymple Did you have a vaginal birth or cesarean if you don’t mind me asking? It’s my first baby, he was delivered by c-section so I don’t think the placenta would be an issue? Unless they weren’t very thorough when they did it 😬

@NewMeNewYou Mostly formula but expressing to bottle feed as well, he has a mix of both. Didn’t expect a period so soon but you might be right! As with it being bright red and the cramps/pains etc.

I bled for a month, which I think incorporated my first period. Then back to regular cycle, despite breastfeeding. Same both for vaginal and CS.

c-section can do that to you - I've had one two weeks ago and my midwife has warned me this may happen. Basically the wound may get pulled and bleed if you walk too fast or twist your body in a weird way...just keep an eye on it and let your midwife know about feeling dizzy

as an example: it looked like my bleeding was slowing down, then I went for a walk and bled through a pad...just another wonderful day of motherhood! 🫠

Vaginal birth. Plus dc3, but had MMC between dc2&3, so probably not comparable to your situation.
