Mother's Wrist

Has anyone had "Mother's Wrist" or De Quervain's?
I'm really struggling with it. My son is 4 months old. I've had it for 6 weeks and it's so painful. I get these popping sensations round my wrist and it's agony.
I have been offered a cortisone injection but only after I stop breastfeeding which I really don't want to do.
Have tried to get help from family with lifting the baby etc. but when it comes to it, they don't.
Anyone got any tips for making it better? I have a splint.

I got this two weeks after my son was born. It was very painful! They misdiagnosed me so I didn't get the injection till 7 months later. The thing is, the longer you wait with the injection, the less likely it is to work. I haven't heard anything about breastfeeding and I had a very good consultant, recognised in treating this condition. I did BF but only a bit (mixed feeding) and continued after the injection. It's only a local injection so it shouldn't absorb too much into your bloodstream. Perhaps ask about the BF thing once again.

If you wait too long and the injection doesn't work for you, then the only option you'll be left with is a surgery. It's not very invasive but you will need someone to do stuff around the baby for a few weeks, which not everyone has as an option.

My injection did help a lot (!) and now, several months later, I'm still trying to ride it out so that I don't have to have the surgery just yet. When it gets worse I use Voltarol max (twice a day) and splint it for a week or two. I'll see how long I'll manage to dodge the knife.

What you can do now is to splint it and use Voltarol regularly but do consider the injection as at the moment you have around 80% chance of it working. 🤞🏻

I had it and had the injection while breastfeeding. I’d get another opinion if I were you. Hope you get it sorted!

Hi BananaPalm,
Thanks for the advice. I didn't realise about the injection being less likely to work if you leave it. I have a phone appointment with the physio tomorrow so I'll ask about the injection again.
Thanks for the other advice too - am currently splinting but will try voltarol too.
It's an absolute pest of an injury, isn't it?
