Hi everyone,

Prior to having baby I was on the combined pill which worked well for me. At my 6 week GP check, she recommended I transfer to the progesterone only pill as I was breastfeeding. I am reluctant to change my pill as the combined pill worked well for me with no side effects and therefore worry this will change with progesterone only pill.

I have read on the internet that the combined pill is ok to use 6 weeks so I am confused as to why the gp recommended the switch. Obviousy I want to do the right thing but don't want to switch if not necessary.

Is anyone breastfeeding and still on the combined pill? Or has anyone else switched to progesterone only and how are you finding it?

Thanks xx

I was on the mini pill for around 6ish years before falling pregnant. I was switched to another brand pill and it was awful, bad headaches, awful moods etc and that's when we decided to start TTC as I stopped the pill.

I was given this again at 6 weeks PP and it was awful. Really messed up my periods, and had random bleeds for moths. (There's a few threads on here about the pill post baby)

If it's possible, I wouldn't go onto the mini pill. Or at least give your body time to get back to normal before taking any hormonal contraception. I've not been back on it again, it really messed up my body and also gave me awful side effects.

I wasn't breastfeeding, but didn't want to go onto the combined pill because the main reason for wanting to mini pill was to stop my periods.

Hope that helps!

The combined pill can affect milk supply which is why the GP may not recommend it at only 6 weeks post partum. I would maybe take the mini pill until your milk supply is more established and then you can think about the combined pill.

In the past it was only recommended from 6 months and then it changed to 6 weeks. Just be aware of possible supply issues.
