Breast Engorgement

Hi everyone!

My daughter was born via c-section on 20th December and I think it’s safe to say that my milk has now come in. For various reasons that I don’t need judgment about, I am formula feeding from birth and need some advice about how best to deal with the pain.

I’m wondering whether to leave them well alone and try to distract myself from the pain or whether hand expressing a small amount when it gets too much is a good idea. I understand this will prolong the process! As yet I’m not leaking but my boobs are absolutely huge, rock hard and seem to have changed shape. Needless to say they hurt like hell and I’m worried about getting mastitis. At the hospital the dr told me to hand express, the midwife told me to put warm compresses on and not to express and the internet is telling me to use cold rather than heat! I’m so confused!

What has everyone else done? I’m interested to hear about how long it took for your milk to dry out and any top tips!

Congratulations! I breastfed so don’t have experience of drying them up but cabbage leaves did help me at that time where they felt like a bag of rocks. So sore.

Definitely warm/hot compress on the breasts. Just press to the breast and let some milk leak out to relieve the pain . 🙂

(I had to do this myself. Its the only thing that worked!)

I am in the same position, just a few days behind ! I have left them well alone except for using the cabbage for relief. it is getting a bit better each day. I was told it would be about 7-10 days like this . hopefully your pain is easing off now
