EMDR

Hi all,

I had a very traumatic birth, seizures with preeclampsia and 8 days in hospital. I’ve been offered EMDR, as I also have a lot of health anxiety which was massively triggered.

Has anyone had this and did it work for you? I’ve tried talking therapy before which was great but I never felt it really touched it.

Thanks

I had EMDR for PTSD after a car accident and I have to say, much to my surprise, it was effective. I didn't expect it to be, and to be honest I only went because it was recommended as part of the insurance claim and I thought it all sounded a bit ridiculous. I felt a bit awkward at first but the therapist was really nice, and yes, it dud definitely help me.
I hope you het the help you need.

I had it three years ago for PTSD for birth trauma and it was absolutely fantastic. Absolutely worked.

I have CPTSD and had EMDR a couple of years ago. It did help some.

EMDR therapist here. Give it a go, it’s got a good evidence base for these kind of issues. At the very least you carve out an hour to 90mims a week focusing on yourself and your mental health which can only be good. Worst case scenario it doesn’t help but you learn about yourself and what does and doesn’t work for you. Beat case scenario you get significant symptom reduction. Get yourself a copy of “getting over your past” by Francine Shapiro (the lady that founded EMDR in its current form) and see if what is said in there connects. Best of luck .

I had it for PTSD after a close call with a massive pulmonary embolism. It turned me from a hyper-reactive recluse who didn't sleep for more than a couple of hours a night to a functioning human being again. Thoroughly recommend it.

I’ve posted about this before - I had EMDR after finding out about it on Mumsnet. I was searching for something to help with the severe post natal anxiety and PTSD I had from DC2’s birth.
I wasn’t impressed with my first session, but from the second one onwards it was like witchcraft - made the world of different to me. I always rave about it to anyone who asks

I've had EMDR for PTSD and it was fantastic for me. I've no idea how it works but I was absolutely crippled by anxiety, and now I'm not. I suspect I need quite a lot more to really get 'better', but I'm fine with where I am for now.

I had previously had a lot of CBT which is basically a sticking plaster - the EMDR addressed the source of the anxiety.

I had it for ptsd I was having from near death experience. It really helped me after about 5 sessions and essentially cured my flashbacks and panic attacks.

I had to do mine over zoom too (during lockdown) and it still worked.

Basically you just talk about every detail over and over again until it becomes like a boring story, while moving your eyes side to side and tapping your shoulders.

No idea how it works, but it works
