Is this a cause of concern? 8 days postpartum

My bleeding since birth started off quite light/moderate, I’d say. I noticed some yellow mixed in with the red blood in my pads. It came across as orange.

day 7, the bleeding was still bright red but lighter than it was. Like a period, it seems heavier some times than others. But I felt a gush and I pulled my pants down, there was a few soaked tissues worth of blood and a black blood clot the size of a ten pence coin (it came out long and thick, but it you grouped it together it would be about the size of a 10p)

Day 8, I got up from bed and red blood dropped on to the floor.
i phoned maternity about this and they said as long as it’s not continuous bleeding or massive clots then there’s nothing to immediately be concerned about. She told me to keep an eye on it and to come in if it continues or if it gets heavier.

when I wipe the blood it comes off with a yellow tinge on the paper, is this because the blood is thin or what? I don’t know if it’s normal.
i do ask because I had my placenta manually removed along with having hands up my cervix constantly throughout labour, I had a forceps delivery too. I was given co-amoxiclav to prevent infection and I only have 1 days worth left to take.

is the colour and frequency of the blood normal? Please help

It's the colour that would concern me. I'd ask to get checked out to be safe.

PinkPrawns2 · 24/07/2022 13:01

Does it smell bad? Are you feeling unwell- clammy, feverish etc? Do you have abdo pain with it?

I'd keep a close eye personally unless you have any of the above.

sasscass · 24/07/2022 13:03

@girlmom21 I’m really not sure if this will get removed or get me banned but I’m desperate at this point to get other peoples opinions
the first picture with the soaked tissues and blood clot is what made me call maternity on day 7

It has an odour but it’s not a bad smell at all. It’s far from it. It smells unusual but I’d even go as far as saying it smells quite nice lol. Quite metallic i suppose with a hint of something else

i don’t have any abdominal pain at all, I have some after eating only because I had stomach upset with the antibiotics I was given.
I did wake up with chills and what not the other night but the window was open. I climbed under the sheets and the chills continued for a good 5-10 minutes which was unusual but it hasn’t came back since so I just put it down to being cold and sleep deprived.

Bleeding varies so much, it’s hard to say what’s normal. I’d go and get checked out, will the maternity ward check you over? I live abroad, so not sure how NHS works.

The chills could have been a sign of infection. I was back in hospital a week after birth, needing antibiotics on a drip. I was shivering uncontrollably.

I couldn’t see yellow in your photo. Is your tissue slightly tinted?

sasscass · 24/07/2022 13:27

@SeaGlassShining yeah they would check me out if I phoned up again. I’m waiting to finish these antibiotics first and I’m going to have to get checked out for peace of mind

that was the only time I had shivers or chills or felt unwell.

i forgot to add the picture but this is the yellow what I’m talking about.

That all looks normal to me. Unless you have extremely heavy bleeding, a foul smell or pain, I wouldn't worry. Gravity can mean you get gushes when you stand up sometimes in the early days.

concernedguineapig · 24/07/2022 13:43

It looks completely normal from
those pictures but it's impossible to provide accurate medical advise over mumsnet so I would never try to.

If you're filling a large maternity pad every hour and having to change pads because it's full or if you're passing clots the size of a 50 pence piece then go to triage.

You can bleed for up to 6 weeks after having a baby. Bleeding can increase with physical activity/mobilisation.

Borracha · 24/07/2022 13:46

Yellow is normal in my total non-professional opinion. In fact, I’m sure my OB told me to expect it. If you Google ‘yellow lochia’ it seems quite common. Are you breastfeeding? I quite often had ‘gushes’ after/during feeding as it makes your uterus contract.

sasscass · 24/07/2022 14:02

The picture of the yellow on the pad was taken 3 days post partum and I thought it wasn’t meant to be yellow at that point? Or is it different for everyone? Because according to online my lochia is meant to be creamy or pink right now but it’s still bright red

I am mostly formula feeding but I do express breast milk (or attempt to) once or twice a day

@Borracha i keep forgetting to tag people , sorry! ^

I’m not a medical professional.

I’m pretty sure my pads looked exactly like your “yellow” one. If you’re worried in future, take a pad into the hospital to be checked. Show these photos if you do go in.

I had bleeding for 6 weeks, sometimes gushes early on when standing. I even took a pad in with a clot to be checked as I was worried back in 2015. Always best to be checked if you are worried.

Best wishes OP xx

I think this all looks and sounds pretty normal, I def remember a kind of yellow tinge, had clots on and off for a few weeks, usually when i had over exerted a bit, it been lying/sitting & got up. Breastfeeding also seemed to cause a bit of a flood or a clot.
I totally know what u mean re the smell as well, a weird kind of metallic sweet smell, it was distinct but def not unpleasant.
