My first thought is are you drinking enough water? Have you also tried upping water rich foods like melon, strawberries, broccoli and jelly?

Cherries and cherry juice are also supposed to be good.

Call your GP.
You might have hurt yourself and each time you go it hurts irrespective of the softness of the stool. Get disposable thin gloves, clean yourself each time you go (water and mild soap) and put on vaseline up there in preparation for the next time you go. The GP can prescribe you a proper cream that would work as pain relief up there. I was prescribed lactulose as a softener. Did not work. But this is anecdotical.
Drink 2 to 3 litres of liquid per day. (milk, soups, water, teas, melons) It's summer time. Ditch rice for potatoes with skin. Fibers are your friend. This is was I was told when I had my little ones, you need water for yourself and for the milk, but your body helps itself first.
I second previous poster: pears are rich in fibers. It works.
Put yourself in an anatomical position to go, (stool under the feet etc.) It helps too. No straining.
Absolute emergency : Glycerine suppositories over the counter, will soften the stool and will fix the commotion in 15 minutes max. Put one in the freezer/ dip it in oil to get it in without added commotion.
I won't let it unchecked. Call your GP.
