When to restart the pill?

Day 40 postpartum, period hasn't started yet but I'm formula feeding so it won't be long. Oh and I'm dreading it reading the horror stories of bloodbaths! Is it best to get a few periods out the way first before starting the pill? If it's horrific already to start with I don't want to screw it up until it's settled?

After I had my DC I was told to start taking my pill on day 21 (also formula fed)

wingingit33 · 04/04/2022 11:11

Hmm I'm day 41 now @Alreadysalty!

Are you able to check with your HV? The midwives at the hospital told me 21 days then when my HV did checks at home she told me the same thing.

As soon as you like if you’re confident you’re not pregnant.

Which pill? Remember you won’t be protected against pregnancy for the first 2-7 days depending which pill you’re on.

Presume first day of period

You can start from day 21 and be covered immediately against pregnancy. If starting after that (and not on the first day of a period) you need 7 days of pill taking if taking the combined pill or 2 days of the mini pill before you are covered against pregnancy.

You don't need to wait for a period to start contraception as long as you're sure you arent pregnant.

wingingit33 · 04/04/2022 13:04

Ordinarily yes @dementedpixie but postnatal I wonder if it's best to have a first natural cycle so you know where you are?

Nope, no need. If you need contraception you can just crack on with it.
