Hi everyone

I am a breastfeeding mother. I really want to know what breastfeeding mum should have on her meal plan list.

I know what i should avoid but i cant really choose meal for lunch and dinner. It is hard to find .

Who has a list about breastfeeding mum's meal plan?

What do you need to avoid?

Eat normally. I've breastfed 2 kids and never changed my diet to do it (I was already dairy free when my son was diagnosed with CMPA)

Eat what you fancy

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 05/01/2022 11:19

Lots of cake. Absolutely essential. Otherwise the more wide and varied your diet the theory is that the more wide and varied your child's palate will be as the taste comes through the milk.

Ignore any guff about avoiding onions or spices or whatever. It's nonsense.

You can basically eat or drink anything, just stay hydrated.

Motherofcats007 · 05/01/2022 11:37

Just make sure you’re having enough calories. So agree with pp, cakes are essential

My midwife said it’s a good idea to have lots of snacks things you can eat with one hand. Also fluids out should mean fluids in so a drink to hand is a good thing.

No special meal planning/dietary requirements other than drink plenty and eat what you fancy.

The only thing I had to give up was fresh orange juice as it gave my son really bad colic.

ChocolateHelps · 05/01/2022 21:43

Breast milk is made from your blood. What toy eat may affect baby (ie if baby has CMPA) but mostly it's likely to be 'an age and stage' of the baby. Eat to hunger, drink to thirst. Eat well so you have energy to look after your new baby

Congratulations.

Find a local breastfeeding support group as well. Real life mums sharing what works with their babies can be so helpful

Yes it is. I ate dried beans and it affected to my baby too. We suffered 3-4 days long. I cant drink fresh orange juice, dried beans etc which makes gas.

Apart from the things that you already identified that do not suit you/your baby, I’d suggest a wide range of food and plenty of it.

I was anaemic so I tried to add green veg and red meat into my diet, for example, I bought sliced cooked beef and good bread and had sandwiches as a snack.

From memory some meals I had were: granola, fruit and yogurt in a big bowl for breakfast. I’d have two breakfasts a lot of days if up in the night.
In addition to sandwiches/jacket potatoes etc for lunches I had plenty of home baking cakes etc.
Dinners I can’t really remember but good portions of mainly oven baked stuff like chicken with veggies and potatoes or pasta based meals.
Drinks I had slightly less coffee but had some good quality juices plus lots of water.
