I'm afraid that's normal at that age. Baby only has a tiny tummy so feeds little and often. The feeding during the night also stimulates milk supply. It's not that baby isn't getting enough, so if that's the only reason you feel you need to get formula then there's no need Smile it will get better!

It's normal and works to up your milk supply. Baby is only two weeks old, give it a few more weeks and things will settle.
If you're getting plenty of wet nappies then that's an indicator that baby's having enough milk. As pp said at 2 weeks a baby can only stomach a very little amount at a time.
Have you had baby weighed at 10/14 days? What was the weight gain like

There's no shame in wanting/ getting formula my love, but IF you do want to continue to breastfeed, formula at this stage will make it harder and longer for you. It feels like it will never end but by 5-6 weeks it does get easier. It's shit and it's hard and you're doing brilliantly. If you are able to get some online/ in person support (baby latte groups, midwife's, health visitors, La Leche League) you might benefit from it but sadly this is normal and natural- he's just trying to get your supply up and get his tiny tum full. Good luck x x

This happened to me. Sent me crazy being so sleep deprived and also effected me bonding with my baby early in. It's hard, so hard.

What I would say is if you want to continue breastfeeding, 2 weeks is very young to introduce a bottle. It's easier for a baby to drink via bottle than breast so they can end up resenting the breast and only taking the bottle, so make sure it's something you're really happy to do.

I will say at about 4 weeks I would get at least 2 hours sleep, he's now 3 months and I only wake up to feed twice in the night, once at about 2/3 and once about 5/6.

Best of luck. !

The more baby feeds, the more milk you make. The way baby increases your supply is by feeding feeding feeding. If the milk stays in your breast it is reabsorbed by your body, and then your body will make less for the next feed. So if you do give any formula it's important you express at the same time so it doesn't reduce your supply. This stage is an absolute killer though!! It will get better!!

Can you feed lying down so you can get some rest?

BlueMoon23 · 03/01/2022 09:19

Baby is cluster feeding which then prompts your body to make more milk. This happens every so often as baby grows and develops. It is exhausting for you but part of the usual breastfeeding process. If you can, stick with it as it will only last a few days and then settle again. If you introduce bottle feeding now it interferes with this supply/demand process but of course entirely understandable. Breastfeeding is really hardcore at the beginning but it does get easier. Get support, I couldn't have carried on without it.

All perfectly normal and doesn't indicate that you have a low supply at all. There's a growth spurt at 2 weeks and she will be building up your supply.

It's fine to introduce formula if you're thinking of stopping BFing but if you do want to continue it will have an effect on your supply as your body will start to produce less.

Have you tried feeding lying down? You might get some more rest then.

Could you spend today in bed with her? Just feed when she wants to abs both sleep when you can. You will feel better rested and she'll be through the growth spurt soon Thanks

If you do decide to mix feed, I was told the NUK teats best replicates the suck pattern of a breast for very young babies. Make sure you get an age appropriate teat: newborn.

Fwiw I mix fed my three kids from birth (one formula feed a day; rest from breast) and they all took to breastfeeding JUST FINE. I mix fed till 1.5 years old, by which time they could hold their own bottle and I was ready to stop.

I credit mix feeding with a pleasant newborn experience with all of them. It took the angst away as I knew they were fed.

We found that DS would get himself into right state - didn't seem to know if he wanted to be picked up or put down, fed, or not.

In the end DH used to put him in the sling or pram and take him for a late night stroll at 11pm ish.

When they came back, he was either asleep, or ready for a decent feed with less faffing about, and I was rested and calmer after 30-45 minutes break.

DH also learned how to latch a baby so that if I was bone tired, he could latch baby onto me and watch us both so I could doze whilst feeding.

It's worth a try.

Thanks for all replies. Getting a midwife visit soon will see if he's gaining weight. Will see how it goes . Xx
