3 weeks post birth and shivers/chills

I've had the chills again today, I had it at 1 week postpartum too and called triage for advice.

Both times they've made me feel like an idiot and seem to be only interested in sending me for a PCR test. Both times I've been negative.
The advice they gave was take paracetamol and keep feeding baby (breastfed).

Not hugely helpful, the reason I was concerned enough to call in the first place was it felt just like when I had an infection after a previous baby. I told them this, they didn't care.

Anyone else had the chills/shivery/feel like can't get warm? How long did it last? Any ideas?

Have you taken your temperature? Any other symptoms? I did with second child but that was shortly after birth due to shock!

rubyslippers · 27/12/2021 21:28

When my milk came in I felt shivery and Poorly as you describe - around day 4/5 post birth
Do you maybe have mastitis or a blocked duct
Perhaps call a breastfeeding helpline?
I would deffo take paracetamol and plenty of fluids for now and see how you feel in the morning?

I guess they’re thinking it’s mastitis? (Re: telling you to keep feeding.)

Any other symptoms? Temperature? Pain?

Mama427 · 27/12/2021 21:33

Don't have a temperature (37.4). I do have some pain in one breast, I wondered if that could be a blocked duct. I did attempt to tell the midwife this but she was only interested in whether I'd had a covid test

Would a blocked duct cause th chills, or would it have to have progressed to mastitis to cause it?

I felt exactly like that with mastitis, was out on a walk and suddenly felt I’d been hit by a truck. Convinced it was covid so went to get PCR then when feeding later realised my breast was hot and red. Might be worth getting some antibiotics from GP tomorrow.

BrutusMcDogface · 27/12/2021 21:42

Just feed from the sore breast as much S possible. First time I had mastitis I had antibiotics (temp of 40, though!) second time I started feeling the symptoms and just fed, fed fed until it cleared.

Can you ring your gp and ask for antibiotics? Say you have mastitis. In my experience at the mo they’re happy to help in this way as not many people can go in and be seen in surgeries.

Hope you’re ok!

How are you both today @Mama427?

You might find this article from Kellymom helpful Thanks

Hi, awake all night shivering, called 111 and they have diagnosed mastitis so been given antibiotics. Hopefully they start working soon, feeling pretty awful still but baby is fine :)
