Postnatal Poo and my Poorly Pelvis

Hi everyone, just looking for advice and experiences.

I gave birth yesterday (vaginal) to my second baby. The birth went well and I ended up with nothing more than a superficial tear with three stitches. They don’t hurt at all really.

The problem is pelvic pain which has worstened to the point I can hardly walk! Earlier when we were leaving the hospital I swear I could feel my pubic bones clicking. It was horrible and I ended up getting a wheelchair ride to the car.

Also, TMI but I really need to poo - the poo is there in my bottom but I can’t move it. It’s so uncomfortable. I’ve had lactulose but it’s made no difference.

Had a bit of a cry tonight because I feel like I can’t take care of my baby or my eldest properly. My husband has been amazing, thankfully, but it’s upsetting regardless.

Has anyone got any tips or advice, or has experienced something similar?

Thanks!

I remember that - I walked like a drunk person for a while. Everything came back together eventually and the pain vanished. If it doesn't, see if you can get an appointment with a woman's health physio and just have a check over.

Keep taking the lactulose and drink plenty of water. Move about as much as is comfortable. You only gave birth yesterday! It takes time for everything to get back to regular.

Congratulations on your baby!

Firstly, many congratulations on your baby! Try wrapping some loo roll around your hand and hold it to your perineum whilst you strain. Try a warm bath, try some milk of magnesia (read the label) but mainly don't panic. The poo will move 😀

Can you just sit on the loo with knees up if possible for as long as you can and wait for gravity to take effect? Holding everything else in place with tissue round your hand of course.

I remember this all too well (I'm 10 weeks PP) my saviour was glycerin suppositories. Get them on Amazon prime or boots. Made my first few pops pain free - and I was completely constipated with episiotomy stitches!
It softens whatever is up there, you won't regret it!

Hello, it sounds like you could have pelvic girdle pain (PGP) you should be able to get an urgent referral to physio. For the poo, I'd suggest a glycerin suppository, it's not the most pleasant experience but should shift it and make it softer. I hope you feel better soon.

*@ame88*@HotPenguin I just did two glycerine suppositories and they helped a LOT. Thank you for the advice! There’s still some up there but it’s improving.

@DerbyshireMama I’m going to try with knees up - it feels like it’ll help. Thank you!

@Tempusfudgeit ‘Don’t panic’ is excellent advice! Honestly I feel a bit panicky every time I think about it. But it’s not going to be stuck up there forever Grin I hope!

@sar302 Thank you, it’s good to know other people have been in the same position! After my son I had awful pain but it did go away eventually and I need to be reminded of that. I should be able to go to a women’s health physio as I’ve been before so know where to find them.

Thanks everyone, this has been helpful!
