Hii!!
I'm being persuaded to go out this weekend, my baby will be 2 weeks old and so far is exclusively breastfed, he does really well and sometimes wakes 4/5 hours after a good sleep for a feed, other than that it's 3 hours. Im wondering how I'd be best going on Friday, shall I express n give those bottles to my mum for him (I haven't done this yet because im confused on the options ie. pumping or lactating etc??) OR would he be okay with formula for the night?

I know there's barely any alcohol that gets into breast milk and im not planning on getting black out drunk haha just going to the pub for a few drinks without the restrictions of watching my baby after. Please no judgements, it's hard enough being a parent without other folks nasty opinions interfering.

THANKS IN ADVANCE XX

You are still really early into breastfeeding so your supply is still being established. Therefore, regardless of whether you feed the baby expressed milk or formula you will need to pump any missed feeds to ensure you're still making enough milk for your baby (ie pumping and dumping depending on how much you've had to drink - one or two drinks should not have any great impact on your milk though). Are you confident your baby will take a bottle? It's up to you what you decide to do pump beforehand or formula feed.

Has he had bottles before (of anything)? Your mum might have a hard time getting him to drink anything. So my main advice would be test that beforehand.

Tbh this is a bit a of a harebrained idea. There will be plenty of more nights out ahead of you. Your new baby will only be 2 weeks old once and she needs her mother. Can you not hold off letting your hair down until you’re at least more confident about feeding?

When my mum had my little boy for an afternoon in the early days, she gave him expressed breast milk and formula - combi fed at the time.

I pumped the missed feeds too as my boobs were so full and uncomfortable.

This isn't a judgement but you are risking threatening your supply and baby's routine, which may disrupt bf. You really need to pump at the same time as someone else gives a feed otherwise your body will think to make less milk at that time of day tomorrow.

Your baby won't know it's even been born yet. Have you read up on the fourth trimester and what your baby needs at this point?

PeacefulDreams · 05/11/2021 06:03

At just two weeks old can you not wait for a night out? You are still at a really crucial time for establishing your breastfeeding supply.

Zarene · 05/11/2021 07:53

Do you actually want to go? Personally, I wouldn't.

October2020 · 05/11/2021 07:54

This is insane. Read up on the fourth trimester and do what is best for your baby!

Seeline · 05/11/2021 07:57

Most babies of that age are feeding every 2-3 hours if bf. I'm surprised they are lasting 5 hours. Also, if they have not had a bottle before do not assume they will feed from one just like that. One of mine would never take a bottle. I ended up feeding for 15 months.

kitkatsky · 05/11/2021 08:03

I wouldn't OP. It's a bad time for your milk supply and you don't really want to be hand expressing in the loos on a night out. By 6 weeks your supply should be established and it'll all be easier

Does your baby take a bottle?

To be honest I think this is a bit early. I'm not remotely anti alcohol when breastfeeding but I think you'll find your boobs get really sore being out all evening. I think this will end up being stressful.

I would wait till your baby is more like 3 months old at least.
