How to keep warm when breastfeeding

Hi all
First baby was a summer babe so didn’t have this problem! Breast feeding so far seems to be going better than last time. Baby is wanting milk every 2/3 hours including over night but I’m struggling to keep warm when it is feeding time, especially my boob and shoulders. Ive got several of the clipped string vest tops with built in bra so I can just pop out a boob. I’m wary of a bra and long top every night as they are a faff in the daytime let alone trying to get a boob out in the dark night without giving baby a mouthful of top. How are you other ladies managing?

I’m usually boiling anyway but I sit up to feed (not sure if you are sitting or lying at night) and have my duvet up to my lap, a muslin over one shoulder and my baby across my boobs so only one shoulder is out if you see what I mean? So you could always drape a muslin over that shoulder too if cold?

I have a sicky baby so make sure to hang a few muslins over the back of my bed before going to bed so all I need to do is reach behind add grab one.

Could you also take a warm drink, herbal tea or something to bed with you in a flask and sip during feeds?

I just wear my normal jammy top with long sleeves. Don't find it any faff at all to just lift my top up and unclip my bra! I am also always too hot though. I've usually got the baby on a pillow on my knee too which keeps me warm too, as well as duvet. Can you have a cardi or dressing gown next to your bed to throw on? Although I'm sure that's more faff than just wearing a top.

tattychicken · 20/10/2021 02:29

A pyjama top with buttons, so you can unbutton it and slide the baby inside, keeping your shoulders and most of your boobage covered and warm.

Sweetpeasaremadeofcheese · 20/10/2021 02:35

Button up pyjama top with a cardigan over the top if it's particularly chilly

Dellit · 20/10/2021 02:35

I used a cheap but thick fleece dressing gown. Popped it on over my vest as soon as I got up to the baby and then kept it on for the nappy change and feed (it was huge so I could snuggle it round the baby too if she needed it) and I was toasty. Plus was very easy to wash and tumble dry if it got milk etc all over it.

I wear a long sleeved top over a nursing vest. I am very sensitive to the cold and change in temperatures so tend to put a dressing gown on when getting out of bed. I also have a blanket on the chair I feed my baby in. I found the b shirt long sleeved tops good as well if you don't like the faff of pulling a top up. There are also hoodies with a nursing flap that might help.

Wotsitsits · 24/10/2021 10:57

Two tops. Vest underneath with shoe string straps lengthened to max. Long sleeved top over the top.

I got a bunch of vests from Primark a few years ago for 2.50 each

Fdksyihfd · 24/10/2021 10:58

Shirt style night dress so you can just unbutton it and pj bottoms if you want

NumberZ · 24/10/2021 10:59

I don’t bother with a vest or anything just normal PJs - let the girls hang free! and a fleece blanket over my shoulders.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 24/10/2021 11:01

A vest - cheap ones from New look have elasticated tops/ neckline so it's easy to pull down, wear it under your normal PJ top.

Yep, this is what I did with my two winter babies. Big warm dressing gown which I could snuggle them inside to keep us toasty warm.
Aozora13 · 24/10/2021 11:10

I sleep in a nursing vest plus soft nursing bra (to keep the breast pads in place) then have a short-ish bed jacket type thing I whip on when feeding. Baby is in a sidecar crib and I feed her sitting up in bed.

Caspianberg · 27/10/2021 09:00

Soft h and m nursing bra plus button down long sleeve pjs

AppleButter · 27/10/2021 09:04

A loop scarf/snood for your neck, or a warm cardigan with the top button done, the others open. Plus, on your tummy, a tummy warmer e.g. from kidney karen, bit other brands have them too. So if you need to hitch your vest up, your back and tummy stay warm.

Eileen101 · 27/10/2021 09:05

Dressing gown and boot slippers for me, it's really going chilly in the nights at the moment.

Probably a stupid question with the price nowadays, but if you're up every 2-3 hours with a newborn, can you leave the heating on? When my eldest was a newborn, we were stopping with my mum, who has the heating on pretty much constant, and it was much better for keeping warm during the cluster feeding Grin

Alfixn · 27/10/2021 09:11

I have some special long sleeve nursing tops i wear for this.
The ones which have a slit in the material across the front under the bust, so you just lift that bit up and your chest/shoulders remain totally covered and nice and toasty.
Bshirts are one brand but Seraphine and Next do them also. I love them!
I'm an extra cold person it seems so I tend to throw on a fleecy dressing gown and fluffy socks as well.

Alfixn · 27/10/2021 09:16

Oops, it's H&M that does them, not Next. These, OP.

These or the vest version are also very handy for feeding while out and about especially if you're a bit self conscious about it

wombatspoopcubes · 27/10/2021 12:57

I sleep in a cardi (only top button closed) over a nighty with buttons. And leggings. And socks.

It's cold innit?

2021expecting · 28/10/2021 16:23

I wear a breastfeeding/clipped vest at night and an old long sleeved top, but I cut the top just below boob area so that it was easier to lift up. Or a wrap style long sleeved top.

toastfiend · 28/10/2021 16:26

I'm no longer breastfeeding, but had a winter baby. Thick dressing gowns, wrap top jumpsuits (Tesco and asda do them in the pyjama/"lounge wear" sections, the GAP zip side jumpers, and Juno Jack's zip closure breastfeeding hoodies all helped to keep me warm.

Tittie · 28/10/2021 16:39

If you don't mind looking like a prat, you can get adult zip up sleep bags (like the ones babies wear). They're not cheap but they're warm.

I feel like this is why my mum/grandma used to have shawls! I think they need to make a comeback.

MeadowHay · 30/10/2021 11:41

I feed in a rocking chair. I sleep in a sleep bra and regular PJs. When I get out of bed I put a fleece or jumper or dressing gown on and bedsocks or slipper socks. I also keep one of DS's blankets on him as I get him out of his bed. I don't find it a problem to pull down the cups of the sleep bra and pull up PJ top

PineappleSun · 01/11/2021 09:43

I bought this beautiful garment, works a treat!

Sandrine1982 · 12/11/2021 21:28

My gear for winter:

No bra
Long vest top with larger opening around the armpits
Plus a warm long sleeve crop top

When it's feeding time, I'd pull the side of the long sleeve top up ... pull the vest top to the middle to expose breast... lie down with baby on the side.

I've never managed to wear those tops that opened in the middle between the breasts. I'm a side feeder ...
